Hailing from San Antonio, The Black Market Club is an indie-rock quintet specializing in catchy lyrics, moving melodies, and driving riffs. The band has been described as "a taste of hardcore, a pinch of progressive rock, and a dash of upbeat indie-rock”, and has been compared to the likes of Circa Survive, Manchester Orchestra, and Local Natives.
The initial group-comprised solely of instrumentalists Zach Taylor, Austin Busbee, Xavier Zevala, and Andrew Bauer worked for months without a vocalist. They took advantage of that time to explore, and develop their sound. However, as the group continued to grow more comfortable in their instrumental environment, so did their desire reach out and include a singer. After many months of pursuing a vocalist unsuccessfully, The Black Market Club managed to uncover a vocal powerhouse- Blake Cook.
As the quintet thrived in the scene, the band realized that something was missing. Everyone knew that the sound could be bigger and better, but had difficulty finding the right person to fill the void. In late march, Ben Griffith joined the ranks and became a full-time keyboardist and guitarist- adding the missing sound the band had hoped for. With this final addition, the six-piece has been able to take their sound to new heights- incorporating elements of post-rock, progressive, post-hardcore, and indie rock, with influences ranging from Explosions in the Sky, Thrice, Two Door Cinema Club, Minus the Bear, and more.
On April 5th of 2013, the band released their debut EP "Faults & Fractures", a culmination of experiences and feelings expressed through seven memorable tracks. In the first year, Faults & Fractures has gained a high level of recognition from multiple platforms, including the title of "second best cd" and "second best new song: Pieces" by the San Antonio Current. Over the past year, The Black Market Club has had the opportunity to share the stage with Glassjaw, The Kin, Finish Ticket, The Soil & The Sun, Kellen & Me, The Heroine, The Last Place You Look, Adema, and others.
