A few years ago - a buddy of mine and I hopped on a bus to Mazatlan MX in Laredo. This bus driver stole my buddie's wallet containing all his info and cash. We didn't realize this until we were underway. The bus driver was back at the station counting the cash while we were (2 white guys) heading southbound in Mexico at 12am. [17 hours later]-- Well after we arrived in Mazatlan and were attempting to get $$ wired - I went to the nearest tienda and bought some Modelo Beer. I looked at my buddy Mark and said - "fuck it - I'm gunna write a song about this!" And that is when I wrote the first half of Southbound in Mexico. Without any form of I.D., we had to smuggle this big ass dude back into the US. 2 months later we flew down to the Yucatan. We rented a villa 45 min south of Cancun on the beach. The Federales patrol the beaches for cocaine drops and poaching turtle eggs. As they walked by I yelled "Quires una cervesa?" (Do Yall want a beer?) - They walked over with thier AK 47s and began to party with us. I asked the commander to pose for a picture with me. There he was with his AK and me with my guitar. I got a crazy idea and asked him to trade for the picture - well - he went for it!!! When I got home I finished the song - Southbound in Mexico. It was the first song I ever wrote. 6 months later it was playing on the radio.
