Prickly Pear Boys have been entertaining Austin crowds with their mix of originals and cover tunes for over 20 years. Influences include John Prine, Jimmy Buffett, Guy Clark, Jerry Jeff Walker, Bob Dylan, Ian Tyson.
Songs featured here were written by Mike, Jon, Doug, and Steve, accomplished songwriters in the Americana tradition. Mike recently won the Cayamo 2012 "Songwriter Open-mic" (his brother was a Kerville Folkfest winner; it's genetic!). Jon studied guitar under Dave Van Ronk (Jon has been doing "Americana" since before there was "Americana"). Steve adds that Cajun flavor to things and is currently touring in Costa Rica! And you may see Doug around town as part of the Old Holdouts.
Bass player Rich Denney was one of a host of band members receiving the Austin Chronicle's 2011 Texas Legacy Music Award. Chris Collins (mandolin, b-bender) is an adjunct professor of Prickly Pearology. Chris recently scored a mandolin track on Willie Nelson's Remember Me CD.
Several songs feature KOMPOZ.COM artists such as Smokey Fennell (steel and dobro), Toby Wilson (dobro), "Phoephus" (guitar), and others. More on Rich's recordings with KOMPOZ.com at kompoz.com/member/ODennehy.
Several of Doug's songs feature backing by the Old Holdouts.
