Fruits & Veggies / Bio

Fruits and Veggies emerged in February 2008 from the gutters of Umbilo and quickly earned themselves a reputation as hard-drinking troublemakers. Mahala referred to them as: - “the most exciting post-racial, post-punk party band to come out of Durban since, uh, forever!” and went on to say: - "They are a one of a kind band, solid songs, a derisive attitude towards conventions, a blistering stage presence and a really deep commitment to living life to the full." Frontwoman Purity is one of the most dynamic bandleaders in the country and is joined by guitarist Jimbo, bassist Loopy and drummer Big Bear. Levi's Music Mag called their music: "pure genre breaking liberation” and Lloyd Gedye, reviewing their 2011 Splashy set, wrote in the Mail and Guardian: - “The most impressive of the bands on display was Fruits and Veggies, a ska-punk band whose own Facebook page punts a quote describing them as the ‘drunkest, rudest, most homeless band this side of the equator’. This is teenage rebellion Durban style, with some great catchy hooks and some fierce attitude.”
