Kent, Ohio-based, SexyPigDivas, are best described as grunge-y, dance-y, ambient rock. They formed out of necessity in 2009, bringing together varied tastes stemming from Katie Cat’s classical piano upbringing and Nicky Beatnick’s self-taught, jazz-influenced guitar style. With the idea that more is more the duo set forth to prove a two-piece band doesn’t have to sound like one.
While most duos embrace a more minimal approach to making music, SexyPigDivas employs as many musical styles and as much looping, synthesizers/synth pedals, along with switching places as needed to create a musical experience bigger than themselves. Their sound is hard to pin down, having drawn comparisons to Tori Amos and Bjork, and also Radiohead and Dave Grohl.
Since 2012, SPD has been writing scores for independent films. The most recent, “Dakota”, was shown at The Art Institute of Miami. After the release of “Dakota” and their debut album “Eating Square Grapes at Circle Pyramids”, SexyPigDivas became determined to record an even more unique follow up and carve out a place in the Ohio scene. This determination was realized in the release of “Robota” in March of 2013. “Robota” has opened the door for SPD to collaborate with other musicians, have the opportunity to open for national touring acts such as Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, and provided them the perfect platform to bridge the music scene from Cleveland to Youngstown. Touring is the next goal of the group this year, along with promoting their new release. Download your copy of “Robota”: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/sexypigdivas12
