Watch the video for Pousse au Crime, the first release from French Boutik's double 7" Ici Paris, here:
This Paris-based franco-american “pop moderniste” quintet is truly original, the music reflecting their unique vision of modern French pop where elegance and schizophrenia collide to generate a distinctive female vocal driven outfit of many harmonic faces. They take the 'moderniste' element of their tagline seriously and avoid retro déjà vu while still maintaining a clear nod to their 1960's influences. The result is a delightful and clever concoction of classic pop melodies, harmony drenched vocals, a soupçon of swirling organ, and sharp French and English lyrics -- the amusing and troubling sounds perfectly representing French Boutik's timely marriage of English and French pop. The songs are bilingual social portraits peppered with irony, and delivered with a sophistication worthy of their heroes The Kinks, Jacques Dutronc and XTC but firmly planted in the present.
French Boutik's debut 7" Les Chats de Gouttière (copaseDisques 2012) made quite a stir on the independent music scene, receiving rave reviews internationally: "Never has French pop sounded quite so good ... Quite simply, it’s stunning" (Pennyblack-UK) - “This EP is a refreshing blast from across the English Channel" (New Untouchables Nutsmag-UK) - “The title may mean “ordinary cats” but this is not an everyday release” (Record Collector-UK)” - "As perfect pop music is timeless, this record is a must-have and not just for the retro fan" (Dynamite-Germany). “a freshness of inspiration and execution that is good for the spirit” (Distortioni Net – Italy)–“ impressive and delicious four songs are sure to arouse much interest (Nos Somos Las Muertos – Spain) – “Listen….and you will be conquered” (Scootitude – France) – “they deliver exactly what the doctor ordered – sensible pop for this day and age (Sussed – Ireland)
Not missing a beat, the follow-up 4 title double 45, Ici Paris, recorded and mixed at Yeah!Yeah!Yeah! Studios in Hamburg, has already received amazing reviews, with comparisons from Burt Bacharach, John Barry, The Attractions, Motown, Makin’ Time, Serge Gainsbourg and Jacques Dutronc to Stereolab, Broadcast, Squeeze & XTC!
“Modernist pop” they call it. I call it bloody marvelous…. The title track and “Pousse au Crime” are ‘60s French pop meets Stereolab/Broadcast, and effortlessly cool…. whilst closer “Kinky Allumette” is more new-wave Attractions/XTC indie. So it’s to Dutronc, but also to Squeeze." (Shindig! Magazine – UK); “pursued by shadows, desperately hurtles through alleyways on Pousse au Crime, the ghost of John Barry lurking in the dark. Kinky Allumette sounds like classic Attractions sans Spiky Costello. But their precursors ain’t all ancient Britons; you’ll hear yé-yé too, and there’s something modern and knowing here….there’s no hint over overproduction in this alluring release” (Record Collector – UK) " Heirs of sixties pop, with an marked elegance that is rare in this day and age, they affirm through a unique musical aesthetic a pleasing and refreshing modernity. (Rude Boy Train – France) "There are touches of classic Motown, Burt Bacharach and Serge Gainsbourg and of course fans of those great Sixties Yé-yé records …. they bring all these influences up to date perfectly." (RetroMan – UK) ; "... wonderful blend of anglo/french mod pop….This is fresh, exciting, uplifting and fun..." (New Untouchables – UK) ; “….another excellent mod Anglo-French platter” (The Strange Brew – UK) ; “….confronting this globalized world with irony, criticism and elegance.” (Real Mod World – Spain) "four stunning Anglo-French tracks that ooze class” (Heavy Soul – UK); “Ici Paris is an more assured and confident take on the mix of lounge, beat and mod-ish sounds that made the band's first EP so welcome and refreshing” (Harmonic Distortion – UK)
The past year has also seen French Boutik venture far from Paris to deliver energetic live shows – “an impressive performance, and one thing’s for sure, they truly are refreshing” (Shindig Live Reviews - UK) to enthusiastic audiences in the UK (London, Glasgow, Liverpool, Brighton, Broadstairs), Spain (Madrid and the upcoming Purple Weekend in Leon) and Germany, as well as state-side showcases in San Francisco and New York. Already projected for 2014 is a return to the UK for a New Untouchables night in London as well as Cambridge and Broadstairs, plus their first shows in Ireland (Dublin and Belfast).
