Black Lake / Bio

Slink Moss and Susan Jennings are Black Lake, an inter-media duo whose performances fuse video, music, poetry, sculpture, and shadows to create an immersive otherwordly environment. Their signature style is at once sensual and gritty, quotidian and exquisite. Invoking associations of The Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth, Otto Piene, Gego, Tony Ourselor and Pipolotti Rist, Black Lake’s visuals and soundscapes attend to the space between pattern and exploration, building textures with video light, sculptures, shadows, wild guitar riffs, neo-Beat word-scapes, and the haunt of the human voice. The frame and form of their imagery—birds mating, dapples of light, water rippling, night blossoms—draw focus to the tenuous nature of perception. Black Lake’s recent performances in venues such as The RISD Art Museum, Freight+Volume Gallery, and The Wooly have been hailed as “ utterly unique.” David Brody writes in a recent review in BOMB Magazine, "Black Lake enacts a new paragigm...The duo triangulates the rock gig with the presentational detachment of a poetry reading and the DIY trickiness of an art installation...[Black Lake] is all about backing the audience off just far enough to create incantatory elbow room for (their) precisely strummed Mack Truck ragas."
