D. Bess is a one-man-band. He records and loops all of his instrumentation live, mixing blues, ska, funk and reggae into a dubby hybrid. Using a guitar, a cajon and some percussion, he builds the songs using an RC-50 loop pedal, then performs the songs by playing the pedal along with his instruments. The end result is the sound of a full band, with fat bass and crunchy blues guitar pulsing through the sound system.
Man vs. Bear, his first solo album, was released on April 6th, 2012. The album features reggae legend Toots Hibbert of Toots & The Maytals trading vocals with D. Bess on the standout track "Oh Carolina". In addition to the song, the two recorded a music video for the track in Kingston, Jamaica, which features a day in the life of Kingston and D. Bess and Toots singing and recording at reggae icon's home Reggae Studios.
