The Random Artist & Live Painter paint live tonight during this: Portland OR-based keyboardist/producer Asher Fulero (Everyone Orchestra, Scott Law, Hot Buttered Rum, Halo Refuser, Slips, Crystal Bowersox Surrounded By Ninjas, Scott Pemberton Trio, Shimshai, Jah Levi) is an all-around hero of studio and stage on the west coast and beyond for the last 10+ years. His exciting new project is an energetic, funky rockin’ jam-band of the highest caliber, playing a solid mix of catchy and imaginative original vocal songs, exploratory psychedelic fusion instrumental originals, and the occasional cover of a favorite classic. Songs by Pink Floyd, Phish, Steely Dan, or Peter Gabriel might appear amidst a Funky Meters or Grant Green jam, all re-worked live within the band's fun, open-format, improvisatory setting and jet-powered by Fulero's inspired flights of extreme piano technique and the band's shared interest in the space where tight songs meet group improvisation.
DIS/PLAY Throughout the opening reception, Thursday, March 26, 2015, 6pm to 9pm, there are opportunities to meet the artists of DIS/PLAY and engage in multimodal art explorations. Paint with artist Neal Barbosa and play musical instruments made from skateboards, designed with limited hand mobility in mind. At 7pm, The Comedians With Disabilities Act offers a 45-minute comedy interlude, including well-known stuttering stand-up comedian, activist and educator Nina G. SOMArts Cultural Center presents DIS/PLAY, a multidisciplinary exhibition of work by more than 30 Bay Area artists and groups who are stretching and expanding predictable representations of disability in the gallery space. DIS/PLAY centers the perspectives of artists with and without disabilities who deconstruct and examine individual and shared experiences of disability culture, shatter assumptions about access in the arts, explore complex and varying narratives and evoke emotional responses that transcend pity or inspiration. In DIS/PLAY artists claim and define their own identities, experiment, and make their own rules. Coinciding with the 25 year anniversary of The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the civil rights law that prohibits discrimination based on disability, DIS/PLAY explores the way that disability and work by artists with disabilities is framed and described, perceived and judged, absorbed and interpreted. DIS/PLAY highlights and dissolves common boundaries to participation, and introduces audiences to a multi-modal and possibly unfamiliar way of engaging with an exhibition. “DIS/PLAY utilizes SOMArts’ Main Gallery as a public playground to re-think access to cultural work, and create new rules of engagement. For people with disabilities, the words ‘play’ and ‘display’ can often raise complex questions around participation and performance, and then there’s the whole issue of representation” said DIS/PLAY’s curator, SOMArts Commons Curatorial Residency recipient Fran Osborne, whose vision shapes this intentional environment to experience facets of disability culture.

Live painter Neal Barbosa paints during the new master sounds, The New Mastersounds are a four-piece band based in Leeds, England, whose modern take on vintage soul-jazz, funk and rock draws influences from Jimmies McGriff, Smith, and Hendrix, as well as their most closely-associated mentors, The Meters. Try to imagine Grant Green and Lou Donaldson having a fight in a Hammond Organ shop while James Brown holds the coats, and you have some idea of what to expect from this band. Their first single, One Note Brown, was released on Blow It Hard Records in 2000 and was passionately championed by acclaimed Northern Soul and funk DJ Keb Darge. To date, the band has released four studio records: 102%, This Is What We Do, Be Yourself, Keb Darge Presents… as well as The New Mastersounds Re::Mixed, and Live At La Cova. Also of note: their single, “Your Love Is Mine” featuring Corinne Bailey Rae, was used in the 2007 Warner Brothers movie Feast of Love. Having toured throughout Europe, Japan and the USA, the NMS have earned global recognition as a key band in the ‘New Funk’ scene. But purists beware: their unique blend of funk, rock, soul and dance music is hard to sum up and doesn’t fit neatly into any one genre. Headed soon to a city near you, The New Mastersounds deliver gritty grooves and deep rhythms in clubs, theater venues and festivals alike. Their live shows will get you up dancing and hold you there intoxicated by the funk until last call- when you’ll stagger home, sweaty and exhausted, on a wave of euphoria. Led by guitarist and producer Eddie Roberts, The New Mastersounds feature Joe Tatton on Hammond, Pete Shand on bass and Simon Allen on drums. The Heard is a Chicago-based band venerated for its deep pocket and reverence for legendary funk. The group is known for turning out hot, sweat-drenched sets that stretch into the wee hours every Thursday night at live music Mecca aliveOne. The Heard has delivered hard hitting performances at some of Chicago’s top venues, including Metro Chicago, Lincoln Hall, Congress Theater and Concord Music Hall. The group has backed former Galactic vocalist Theryl "Houseman" DeClouet and has shared the stage with national acts Dumpstaphunk, Lettuce, Slightly Stoopid, George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic, Passafire, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, Dragon Smoke, The Nth Power, The Motet, The Mike Dillon Band, Alan Evans' Playonbrother, and The M&M's. The Heard’s music features powerful horn melodies delivered with precision and swagger by Adam Gross (trombone), Lucas Ellman (saxophone), and Parris Fleming (trumpet), the driving rhythm guitar playing of Taras Horalewskyj, tasteful keyboard work by Neal O'Hara, and a slamming foundation provided by bassist Mike Starr and drummer PJ Howard.

““In 2010, Mouse made another discovery. One evening he went to a concert where Neal Barbosa was painting live on stage as the bands played and hundreds of people danced. He invited Mouse to dip in and paint, and a great new context for painting was born into Mouse’s life: live painting. Unlike many live painters, Mouse plans his work in advance. But once he is painting with the music and the energy from the crowd, he goes into a bubble, alone with his muse, oblivious to all but the magic. Mouse paints fast, like at the hotrod shows at the beginning of his career. His brush is dancing, remembering designs he has created for automobiles, motorcycles, shirts, posters, album covers, riffing on them, allowing his subconscious, seasoned by many years of the best art, psychedelics, music, death, and new life to commandeer the brush, to do what it wants while Stanley watches in wonder with the rest of us.” DC Darling.
