Friday, October 19, 2007 The Middle East Upstairs CHEESEBURGER (Kemado Records, NYC) COCKED N' LOADED (CD Release) Wild Zero Blood Vessels 18+ $9adv/$10dos 9PM Doors ******************** CHEESEBURGER Cheeseburger is gamely attempting to do for the Stooges what the Darkness did for Queen and what Redd Kross did for '60s bubblegum: updating the music with efficient hooks, snarky punk attitude, and a knack for visual jokes. The Brooklyn-based trio of singer Joe Bradley, guitarist Christy Karacas, and drummer Luke Crotty update the Stooges' proto-punk yowl for the post-White Stripes generation, with Bradley's spot-on Iggy Pop impersonation both the group's most notable feature and its biggest millstone. Cheeseburger debuted with a self-titled EP in 2002, followed by the sharp, focused EP Gang's All Here in 2005. (Although the EP continues its fascination with Stooges-style aggression and New York Dolls raunch, the cover art is a note-perfect, deadpan parody of the sleeve of Harry Nilsson's cracked '70s soft rock masterpiece Nilsson Schmilsson, with Bradley in the iconic open fridge and bathrobe shot.) The second EP was released by the New York garage punk label Kemado Records, which followed it with 2006's Cheeseburger, a full-length album that reprised many of the songs from the first two EPs. The blues-based hard rock quartet is reviving the timeless passion of such greats as AC/DC, The Cult and Iggy Pop, while adding their own modern, unapologetic style. The backbone of the five-piece is drummer, Rob Davol. With influences such as Phil Rudd and John Bonham, Davol delivers a simple, straightforward approach to modern rock drumming. Complementing this solid foundation is Michael Berardino's thunderous bass lines. He effortlessly blends driving grooves with subtle, yet infectious melodies. Their guitarist, Zackary Kolpan, a musician with roots deeply bedded in the blues styles of Freddy King and Duane Allman, delivers burning solos and sledgehammer riffs with a level of musicianship that takes each song to the next level of excitement and intensity. Finally, bringing the crowd to its knees, throughout every performance, in every venue, is singer Kyle Neeson. A true rock n' roll frontman, Neeson belts out heartfelt lyrics with a clever mix of Glen Danzig's raw power and Bon Scott's party attitude. CNL has steadily built a grass-roots following that continues to grow with every live performance. The sheer excitement of experiencing one of their shows leaves fans begging for more. Cocked N' Loaded have shared the stage with such artists as The Dwarves, The Mooney Suzuki and Scissorfight, and were nominated for a Boston Music Award in 2006 in the Best Hard Rock category. "Harking back to the ear-bleeding aural attack of Bostons Bullet Lavolta, Wild Zeros debut is a search-and-destroy blitzkrieg of punk- damaged (read: fast and snarling) hard rock. It also has the unique distinction of being the last album recorded at New Alliance studios infamous Boylston Street location which may or may not have something to do with the balls-out energy and attitude that this album oozes in spades. The fiery results speak for themselves, and in this case, the music really does do the talking. This is no-holds-barred testostorock for the PBR-swilling tattooed maniac in all of us. Opening with the vicious economy of Battle Royale, a charging shout along anthem, the stage is set for the sonic assault to follow. The slow boogie fake-out opening of Curse of the Red Tiger belies the burning speedrock slammer it really is. Echoes of Thin Lizzy and Kiss on Get in the Tub point out the fact that Wild Zero leans far more to the rock side of punk rock. Burnt Knife and Capacitor are studies in fast, no-frills hard rock whose menacing titles give ample evidence that when it comes to bringing the noise, this group has the bases covered. The final cut, Bachelor Party, closes this 8-song, 20 minute blur of fury with a Motorhead-meets-Fu Manchu rave-up. The performances are tight and spot-on and the excellent production highlights the fact that these chaps can play the devil out of a genre that tends to lack originality. Theres nothing extraneous in this collection of songs only one tune on the album exceeds three minutes, and thats only by a mere five seconds. For those annoyed with the saccharine punk-pop so prevalent these days, and seeking a blasting jolt of old school gut- punching adrenaline, Wild Zero has the ticket for your journey most likely in a 78 t-roof Camaro heading out to the bygone era of kick- ass rock n roll blasting at bonfire keggers in the woods. Duuuuude!! " -Northeast Performer Artist Website: http://www.myspace.com/wildzero ******************** BLOOD VESSELS Blood Vessels play primal rock-n-roll. Primal rock-n-roll was the definite inspiration and is the obvious result. Against a backdrop of often-fractured scenes in which bills are booked with careful observance of sub-genres and scenes, Blood Vessels fit on any bill, from street-punk to stoner rock, without conforming or relying on cliches. Formed in April 2003, the line-up reflects the evolution and re- grouping of several previous bands and projects. Influenced as much by the originators & pioneers of rock n roll, punk, reggae and soul as by early metal, hardcore and even noise, the Blood Vessels are sometimes slow and brooding and sometimes break-neck, and always fueled with guitar sounds that hint at Chuck Berry as much as the Stooges. In spring 2003, Niff (lead vocalist/guitar player) recruited the original line-up from the remains of his previous band, the Shitehawks, & began playing shows.
