Bio: The Ritz Theater's mission is to create a vibrant professional performing arts venue in the city of Newburgh that revitalizes the local economy, enriches the education of youth, and enhances community pride. We believe firmly that the arts can build and strengthen communities. The Ritz Theater is the last remaining historic theater in the City of Newburgh. Neglect and fire have claimed the others. Our goals for the restoration of the Ritz are to create a venue for live performances, provide employment training and educational opportunities for the residents of the community, and provide a home for local arts and performance groups. • Venue for live performance: The restoration of the Ritz Theater will connect Newburgh’s rich potential with surrounding communities and New York City. Currently, there are very few venues for live performance in Newburgh. The restoration will provide the community with a state-of-the-art theater. • Employment training and educational opportunities: We have established a partnership with the Bardavon Opera House/Ulster Performing Arts Center. Staff of both theaters will train residents of the adjacent Cornerstone Residence and members of the community in various capacities, from light and sound operation to box office and administrative duties. We are also partnering with SUNY Orange, who has established a Newburgh campus just blocks from the Ritz Theater. This partnership will allow SUNY Orange students educational opportunities in all aspects of theatre arts. • Home for local arts and performance groups: Newburgh has many arts and performances groups that are in need of a permanent home. The Ritz Theater is adjacent to The Cornerstone Residence, an award-winning 128-unit supportive housing residence that was established by Safe Harbors of the Hudson, the theater’s sister organization. Our project is the first in the nation to combine supportive housing with the restoration of a historic theater. As the first step in the restoration process, the original Ritz Theater Lobby has been renovated into an intimate performance space, and also serves as popular venue for community meetings and special events. Initial programming for the new era of the Ritz has already begun, and with numerous sold out performances, the theater is building an audience and demonstrating a great need for this important project. When completed, the innovatively-designed, state-of-the-art theater will have 825 seats, with storage and dressing rooms in the basement. The restored Ritz Theater will provide exposure to a wide range of performing arts, while inspiring active tourism by creating a cultural destination in Newburgh. Through these developments, the Ritz will build and strengthen our community through the arts.
