Tolan Shaw / Press

“Every now and again, unfortunately less often than I'd like, a record comes along where I sit back, listen and just think “Wow.” I experienced this for the first time this year when Tolan Shaw emailed me a download link for the final masters of his full-length solo debut, Tolan Shaw.”

“If anything can make you believe in the singer-songwriter genre again, it's Tolan Shaw. Blessed with both a wonderful warm voice and deft finger-picking styles, as well as excellent songwriting skills, Shaw has emerged over the past year as a serious contender for next big thing. This summer he won the San Diego County Fair Singer-Songwriter contest and recently released his debut self-titled album. Full of Shaw's soulful tunes like melancholy rocker “Meant To Be,” it's a terrific introduction to his music. The album is a full-band production, complete with New Orleans brass and Hammond organ, but live he's at his most evocative in solo mode, his guitar technique as impressive as his tunes.”

“Tolan Shaw has risen in the San Diego music scene as a pop/soul singer-songwriter who will stop at nothing to build a career with his original music. Both a solo acoustic troubadour and the frontman of his four-piece band, Shaw’s music is catchy and soulful, bluesy and melodic, funky and sincere.”

““Lyrically, everything I wrote came from what I experienced and the relationships I made,” he said. “I spent time teaching English in Guatemala. When you are in a state of travel, you have time to think about other people, and cultures, and to reflect. I think about how lucky we are to live in San Diego.”

““I’m using the gramophone as a logo and branding shtick for a few reasons. I came across three old gramophones at a rummage sale that I use onstage as a cool visual. They’re old-school looking and kinda match the inspiration and vibe of the music. Plus, since the instrumentation includes a four-piece horn section, the horn of the gramophone is a good representation of that.””

“San Diego singer-songwriter Tolan Shaw has won three awards for his music, two this year alone. He also shared in a Best New Artist victory at the 2009 San Diego Music Awards as a member of the gifted young San Diego band The New Archaic.”

“This award-winning young singer-songwriter rose to local prominence as the lead singer in San Diego rock band The New Archaic.”

“Among the highlights this time out will be Tolan Shaw, best known as a member of the indie rock group New Archaic, here in solo troubadour mode, with an arsenal of great folk, pop and rock tunes.”

““The biggest thing I learned as a musician on this trip is that I really want to do this as a career. It’s what I love to do most,” said Shaw, who plans to record a full-length album."”
