"Janu and the Whalesharks “seize the moment” ethos can be heard in their music, frequently upbeat folk, which verges on bluegrass (see numbers such as “Owls” from their Binocular EP). Their music is as fun as their band name is wacky, and their live shows are correspondingly lively. Watching them in concert, only the stodgiest of squares could resist being sucked in to even their quieter songs such as “Journalists.”–OC WeeklyThe Howls, out of North San Diego County bring an energetic mix of indie Folk, Blues Americana and Rock. The band is often compared to Ryan Adams, Tom Petty, Wilco and Bob Dylan. Recording and producing everything themselves, The Howls are as “indie” as they come these days. The band has recently received praise from local musicians like Jon Foreman (Switchfoot) and Sara Watkins (Nickel Creek). The Howls have been lucky enough to share stages with bands like, Switchfoot, Tristan Prettyman, Timmy Curran, Silent Comedy, A Fine Frenzy, The Dig, Get Back Loretta, Stripes & Lines, Dynamite Walls, This Holiday Life and many more. Three brothers singing together from birth, living life like characters out of their own traveling songs...Jay, Lou, and Mickey Smart, from California, have been touring around the country for the past few years having the sort of adventures you’d expect from a couple of young, fun-loving singers. Drawing on a rich heritage of roots music reminiscent of Bob Dylan and the Everly Brothers, the lovable Americana sound of the Smart Brothers will transport you to faraway places that maybe aren’t so far away after all. The boys have played colleges and festivals from coast to coast and have shared the stage with such notable acts as Matt Costa, the Squirrel Nut Zippers, and Roger Clyne.
