The Real Laww / Press

“Toon & The Real Laww have emerged as righteous rap ambassadors”

“It was one of the purest cultural moments I've experienced in a long time.”

“...It was one of the most fun day parties and probably one of the best shows I've been to at the whole festival. Representing the Bull City!”

“Favorite #1 show at Hopscotch Music Festival!!!!!”

“locals Toon and The Real Laww (whose line “It’s hard like Fat Joe struggling with a buckle” wont leave my head anytime soon)”

“Toon and Laww are so polished, smooth, well-timed and professional it is no wonder that rumors abound they will be leading the break out nationally for the Durham hip-hop scene”

“The Real Laww, a.k.a. Jay Lawrence, is a multi-talented man who can spit a rhyme, thrill a crowd, organize a concert and raise money for his fellow Marines”

“Toon & The Real Laww twist and shoot through hip-hop”

“The Real Laww lives for the expressions on the faces of the fans that come to his shows- the laughter, the head bobbing, the dancing, and raised hands during a performance. The hardest working MC in the Triangle...”

“Toon and The Real Laww (Thursday, The Pour House) – The first hip-hop show of Hopscotch 2012 fell into the capable hands of this Durham duo, who offered pure entertainment along with their riveting rhymes... These guys are hip-hop at its most charismatic and dynamic.”

“So there hasn’t been great, quality, consistent hip hop shows in Durham for years. That all changed last night, as Toon & The Real Laww put together the first ever DURM Hip Hop Summit.”

“The Real Laww and Runaway Clothes are tight; collaborating, backing each others events, and their partnership was recognition by the Hip-Hop Summit of the plushness of culture; fashion too, is part and parcel of Durham and hip-hop.”

““The word for the day is consistency,” he said. “Stay consistent and don’t talk about it – do it.””

“His favorite part of performing is interacting with the audience and getting them involved, he said. He also enjoys doing mixed-genre shows. He has shared stages with artists from world music, punk, jazz and other styles. “It feels like the music I’m doing can interweave with all those genres,” he said. “It’s accepted by people, which is really awesome. People can like the music, [even though] they came there to hear something different.” ”

“Continuing the trend set in previous years, this Hopscotch has little more than enough rap — Roots aside — to put together one super-solid bill. The imminently weird Danny Brown is a solid and exciting choice, but the rest are mostly made up of obvious if talented locals — The Beast, Toon & The Real Laww. This isn’t exactly a flaw, but it’s further proof that Hopscotch may leave many hip-hop lovers wanting.”

“Our intrepid correspondent and Beth, photographer for Scenes from my Lunch Hour, attended the Skate Away the Hate event to benefit the Durham Rescue Mission outreach to battered women. Over a $1000 was raised for charity by the team of Toon and The Real Laww. DJ Shahzad weaved and spun some fly grooves. And Runaway Clothes had'em all looking tight.”

“Skate Away The Hate - Lace up your skates for a good cause this Friday at Wheels. Local rappers Toon and The Real Laww host the fun-filled event to benefit the Durham Rescue Mission. Tickets are $10 and doors open at 10pm. For more information, click here or check out the event’s Facebook page. 715 N. Hoover St.”

“Skate Away The Hate! Hosted by the Real Laww and Toon is where you need to be Friday night March 30h, at Wheels”

“Local performers the Real Laww and Toon are trying to help the victims of domestic violence with a special fundraiser Friday night at the Wheels Family Fun Center in Durham. Proceeds from "Skate Away the Hate" will go to victims at the Durham Rescue Mission. Laww said they hope to raise $4,000 during the event, which has a special meaning for them. "Toon, aka Kurrell Rice, my business partner and performer was a victim of domestic violence himself along with his mother," Laww said. "This is why this event is near and dear to our hearts."”

“Spring has officially sprung and on March 30th there’s a perfect way to shake those winter doldrums. Up and coming Durham rappers Toon and The Real Laww have put together what they describe as a rap/skate extravaganza, happening at Wheels Fun Park, with the proceeds benefiting victims of domestic violence through the Durham Rescue Mission. This one-two combo of beats, rhymes and good times have produced music together for years and interestingly enough, it all began with the raiding of a refrigerator. Bound by a heretofore unknown a mutual friend, Laww discovered Toon in his kitchen perusing the perishables in his icebox! What could have immediately become beef changed direction when Toon noticed Laww’s microphones and recording equipment- conversation ensued and musical friendship spawned. Though both artists had been working on music individually, there was an evident mutual benefit from the collaboration. Laww, a Marine reservist and a veteran of both Iraq and Afghanistan...”

“DURHAM – The Durham Rescue Mission and domestic violence victims will benefit from a special roller skating event set for the end of the month. The Skate Away The Hate fundraiser will be held starting at 10 p.m. March 30 at Wheels Skate Park, 715 N. Hoover Road. The goal is to raise $4,000 to help domestic violence victims at the Durham Rescue Mission, according to Durham resident Jay Lawrence, who is organizing the event. “I want to give something back,” Lawrence, an entertainer and U.S. Marine who served back-to-back tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, said. Lawrence said one reason for organizing the event is that his business partner and his partner’s mother were victims of domestic violence.”

“Concert to benefit Wounded Warriors Project This Friday, the 13th, at the Casbah, Toon and The Real Laww will be performing with 10% of the proceeds going to benefit the Wounded Warriors Project. The Real Laww, a marine himself, and Toon have been putting on shows and putting out videos that you may have seen. If not, I’ve included those down below. They’re classics (with credit to their director, Saleem, aka “Kid Ethnic”). And this show will be one too. Go check them out.”

“This Friday night, the Casbah will be showcasing some of the top rappers from Durham's burgeoning hip-hop scene. With The Real Laww being a veteran of both the Iraq and Afganistan Campaigns, he's looking to help out his fellow vets by giving partial proceeds to the Wounded Warrior Project. The Give to Those Who Give Campaign Featuring Toon, and The Real Laww w/J Bully, The Bums, Mr J $5 advance / $7 day of show Fri, Jan 13 / 8pm doors / 9pm show”

“Sandwiched in the middle of Casbah's weekend musical line-up composed of band Hadwynn's CD release party on Thursday and an evening with Jessy Carolina & The Hot Mess on Saturday is a performance by Toon and The Real Laww on Friday. A portion of the proceeds from this show will benefit the Wounded Warrior Project based out of Jacksonville, Fla.. Toon and The Real Laww "Being a Marine myself, this is an organization that is near and dear to my heart," says J Lawrence, aka The Real Laww. The Wounded Warrior Project is dedicated to helping injured service members aid and assist each other while providing unique, direct programs and services to meet the needs of injured service members. Now just returning from a successful tour in Afghanistan, The Real Laww is currently working on two solo projects: "A Mix Tape Vol. 3" and "The L@w Cometh," projected to be released early this year.”

“Straight from NC, The Real Laww brings you a night mare to the haters, the "Professional Hater". Aren't you tired of the same ol zombie rap videos... WAIT! there are none, until now! This a crazy Zombie Rap Video out of NC you gotta check out.”

“Okay, so we know its a few days past halloween, but some of us are still celebrating. Okay not really, but this Zombie video from rapper The Real Laww ft. Toon is so good, its scary. Oh and we promise the song is pretty killer too. Here is a little background on rapper THE REAL LAWW, As a rapper, song writer, producer and Marine, The Real Laww was born to entertain. The Real Laww has lived everywhere form New Jersey, Kentucky to North Carolina and has even excelled in the ranks as a member of the United States Marines. We salute that anyday....”

“The Real Laww. If you haven't already heard of this man, allow me to shed some light on the mystery. He is a renowned Marine (Respect), song writer, producer and all around Super Artist from Durham NC who lays lyrics smoother than melted brains. He contacted me recently about having me help feature his music video, Professional Hater (Zombie Mayhem Cut). Never before have I seen such a flawless meshing of rap and zombies. Words fail to describe in full detail, so instead I will let you watch the video. Pictures are worth a thousand words right? I wonder how many videos are worth... ”

“Could this really be the worlds first ZOMBIE HIP HOP VIDEO (Sorry Sam B, you’re a video game character and don’t count)? A new name is hitting the Underground Hip-hop scene! Check out this crazy video one of our readers sent us!”

“I was wondering where all the Halloween jawns were - this would've been great to post on Monday!”

“I'm not much of a music fan, and I don't follow rap music, but I know what I like. And I like The Real Laww's "Professional Hater" (feat. Toon). The rhymes from this North Carolina rapper are as infectious as the zombies that appear in the video.”

“Shouts to Law and Toon for keeping it Durham on Halloween. Here’s their new video for Professional Hater (remix) feat. the Durham Zombie Lurch directed by Saleem Reshamwala aka Kid Ethnic. Enjoy.”

“It used to be that you'd meet someone, they'd bite you, you'd develop a taste for flesh and pillage the surrounding town looking for someone nice to eat. Apparently, that won't do anymore. There's now a furious new wave of Durham-born zombies walking amongst us and rapping as they go. The source of this revolutionary strain, if a new music video is to be believed, is a hot new track from local rapper and producers The Real Laww and Toon, dubbed "Professional Hater (Remix)." The Real Laww (or J. Lawrence) is a Durham-based veteran of the war in Afghanistan; Toon is a graduate of the Durham School of the Arts. They were documented in the pursuit of BRAINS! by director Saleem Reshamwala (aka Kid Ethnic). No word on whether anyone survived the onslaught.”

“What would Halloween be without a trippy zombie rap video to get you ready for tonight’s festivities? The Real Laww and Toon team up for a solid track featuring original production and dope flow. The video is from Kid Ethnic, the same guy who brought you the video for “Hulk Smash” by Toon. Have a happy Halloween and get weird tonight.”

“The Real Laww and Toon get zombied up for their collab track Professional Hater.”

“Coming out of Durham, NC the multi-talented artist known as The Real L@w really does the Underground justice with his music. From working at McDonalds to ascending through the ranks of the Marines, L@w has travelled many many paths in his life and is currently on his way to pursuing greatness in the Hip-Hop community. ”

“If you like West Coast Hip-Hop, you’ll love L@w. A very creative artist, L@w calls himself a “One Hit 1der” because “I make Wonder Music, 1 hit at a time.” Interesting and very unique to himself, L@w cannot be compared to any of today’s heavily commercialized Hip-Hop stars. In fact, he despises them for keeping the genre stagnant (so do I). In his song “Future”, L@w strikes a definite chord with those who want to see Hip-Hop music get back to being about creativity, uniqueness, and as he puts it “the games been stankin’ so it’s time to change it; I brought you to the future to see real entertainment.” That line is just one of many that showcase L@w’s ire for the lack of growth in today’s music. Oh, and the beat is great!”

“...the quartet was joined by local rappers Toon and L@w for an hour that included everything from original songs to a cover of The Raconteurs’ “Level” to inspired hip-hop lyricism. Much to my relief, the rhymes were well-written and performed with joy. Toon and L@w have distinctly different styles, but drew energy from one another to highly entertaining effect. The pairing of the two MCs with the somewhat amateurish quartet is still a mystery to me, but at least Durham and Chapel Hill worlds are colliding for the greater good.”

"I'm just your friendly neighborhood super artist", says L@w or better known by his family and friends as simply J. He writes, produces/make beats, sings, develops artists, vocal coach, engineers, performs, and all around entertains. "I just love trying new shit.."

“Toon & The Real Laww were an engaging and exciting act, a fantastic to spend a study-filled Thursday.”

“the deeper-voiced Laww (who served in the military, touring in Iraq and Afghanistan as a radio tech) has been known to get dark in his rhyming schemes.”
