“Creston might not be known as a hub for hip hop music, but one local duo is doing its best to make a name for itself. In conjuction with The Twilight Zone, 129 N. Pine St., The Beatnicks will be hosting the first hip hop event in Creston’s history, 10 p.m. Friday. The event is free to attend, but is limited to those 21 years of age or older. The Beatnicks consists of Creston residents Rick James, 29, and Durrell Haynes, 31. Including The Beatnicks, there will be nine hip hop acts performing at The Twilight Zone. The Beatnicks The group formed Nov. 29, even though they already had a show booked before forming. “I called him (Haynes) up on Nov. 29,” James said. “I said how about this for the group name and he was on board. Then, we got the album put together in three weeks.” Since then, the pair has done two shows, and has been offered a record contract, which they declined. ”
