Stephen's often eclectic choice of repertoire in his performances reflects his own diverse background; having been an avant-garde concert pianist, fine-art photographer, filmmaker, performance artist, poet, composer and opera singer. His performances are a unique hybrid of music and performance art, utilizing "gender-fuck and genre-fuck" (Stephen's words) to comment on larger concerns and issues central to his body of work.
John Greyson created the role of St. Caesura in his award-winning genre-breaking AIDS opera-documentary FIG TREES (2009) for Stephen. Stephen most recently appeared as the (singing) homophobic cop in Greyson's MURDER IN PASSING (2013), a commuter murder-mystery installation across TTC screens in Toronto; and will be featured in Greyson's upcoming Schonberg/Eurovision-tinted film, JERICHO (2014).
Music also plays an integral part in Stephen's own film and video work, often composing and performing the soundtrack. Recently, his hybrid experimental-documentary INTER-MEZZO premiered in PUFF 2013, and his experimental tone-poem PACED at VKUNST. Stephen is currently working on an experimental feature STILLE STADT which both updates and inverts the city symphony form.
