Our flagship production, The Christmas Revels, is a festive, fully staged celebration of the Winter Solstice and the return of sun and light after the “shortest day,” radiating hope and joy in the renewal of life and the circle of the seasons. Seen by over 10,000 people every December, it draws on traditions and rituals from many lands and peoples, focusing each year on a different culture or related cultures. Our 2013 Christmas Revels harkens back to ancient Thrace – legendary home of Orpheus, Bringer of Music, whose evocative notes open our story. His melodies scatter to the regions of Bulgaria, Greece, Thracian Turkey, and beyond, where each culture shapes them into traditions of its own. Revel with families of an imagined village where these colorful folk traditions weave together. Spyros Koliavasilis and his Karpouzi Trio (with Len Newman and Margaret Loomis). Spyros plays and teaches 19 instruments and specializes in the authentic practice of traditional music spanning all of Greece, with a particular emphasis on the music of Asia Minor. The concert will highlight traditions from Asia Minor (most notably on the oud and kemane) as well as music from the Greek islands kmane, lauto and santouri,
Spyros Koliavasilis is an oud, bouzouki, saz, kemane, laouto and canto teacher. He plays 18 instruments and music is his true passion. He composes music and has released a successful, self title CD "Mediterranean Thoughts".
