““One of the executives at CBS, George Butler, suggested that he listen to it,” she said. “He asked Miles to give a statement about my playing and that’s what he said — that my music honored the jazz violinists of the ‘30s and ‘40s. I was blown away by it. I listened to those players, but it wasn’t like I sat down and copied their style.” The 53-year-old described her music as “jazz violin, improvised in the standard form. I tend to mix a little bit of styles. I like to play traditional jazz and funk, and I also like to do folk music, Latin styles, and I love Brazilian.” If most of her students are clueless about her professional gigs and multiple recordings, then even fewer are aware of her beauty pageant past. Robinson participated in Miss Black America in 1983, winning the talent portion of the pageant. “They suggested I go for Miss America, and I said, ‘That’s OK, I think this is good enough for now!”’ she said. She was, how- ever, pleased to have won”
