Tennessee is widely recognized as the birthplace of popular musical genres including rock & roll, blues, and country. Traditional mountain music from the hills of Appalachia evolved into what is today categorized as bluegrass and American Roots. The smoky, distinctly southern vibe of Memphis blues and soul are instantly recognizable, and had a strong influence on the early rock & roll released by the venerable Sun Records. Country music is said to have been born in Bristol and raised in Knoxville before “going corporate” in Music City.
Our local culture is undeniably flavored by our music… and in return, our music has had an impact on popular culture worldwide. Elvis, Johnny Cash, the Carter Family, Otis Redding, B.B. King, Dolly Parton, Aretha Franklin, Booker T. Jones, Chet Atkins, Gregg and Duane Allman, and Tina Turner are just a few of the Tennesseans who are recognized as driving forces in their genres.
Rhythm N’ Blooms celebrates Tennessee’s role in American Roots music – including but not limited to country, jazz, blues, bluegrass, and rock – by featuring musical performances by locally-revered and nationally renowned artists. They aren’t all from Tennessee; and some of them aren’t even from the United States, but their music has been undeniably influenced by those styles popularized right in our back yard.
