PUCCINI: THE MAN & HIS MUSES
This staged presentation takes a look at the composer and the women who came in and out of his life: his lovers, his wife, and his mother. Acclaimed as the most beloved composer of opera in the world, his music pervades movie soundtracks, and his plots have infiltrated our popular culture. This production takes a look at the women who filled his creative imagination. It features fully staged and costumed vignettes of arias and duets selected from his most notable works, including Madama Butterfly, Tosca, La bohème, Manon Lescaut, La Rondine, La Fanciulla del West, and Turandot.
This opera is based on a passage from Dante’s narrative poem Commedia, part I: Inferno. The opera is acclaimed as “among the acknowledged masterpieces of Italian comedy.” Best known for its popular aria, “O mio babbino caro,” this tour-de-force comedy involves the recent demise of Buoso Donati, a reading of the will, the dearly departed’s family members who frantically scheme to benefit their own greed, and the cunning Gianni Schicchi who cleverly becomes instantly wealthy and finds a way for his daughter to marry the man of her dreams.
