John Ford of the Strawbs
British artist, John Ford of the Strawbs, The Monks and Hudson Ford – is best known for his songwriting, having penned award winning, chart toppers “Part of the Union” with the Strawbs and “Nice Legs Shame About The Face” with The Monks – each earning Ford Gold and Double Platinum Record Awards, plus Ivor Novello Award for “Part of the Union,” and addition Gold and Platinum for The Monks’ Suspended Animation album. Ford is also well known as a bass player – who’s influence with his unique percussive bass style gave the Strawbs, originally a Folk/Bluegrass group, new definition into the Rock genre, along with addition of Keyboard Mellotron extraordinaire, Rick Wakeman, who later joined YES. Ford’s “Heavy Disguise,” and music for “Tears and Pavan,” written by Strawbs founding member Dave Cousins, brought the band more success and worldwide recognition.
Ford has made many appearances on Top Of the Pops and on world-wide Tours, shared the bill with other legendary acts Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, Ritchie Blackmore, Dave Mason, Ian Lloyd of Stories, Marc Bolan/T. Rex, Steppenwolf, The Eagles to name just a few. Ford went on to his own Solo Project, also working and recording with Ritchie Blackmore and Candice Night in Blackmore’s Night after relocating to the US.
2012, thus far has been an exciting year for John Ford. Ford’s new album release, Resurrected, has met with accolades, along with Ford (a founding member of The Monks UK band), received a Double Platinum Record Award from EMI for Bad Habits, whilst in Toronto Canada for a special Monks BAD HABITS Tribute show at the legendary Horseshoe Tavern. The tribute show presented by Thomas D’Arcy of Small Sins, featured a slew of members from top Canadian Indie bands – including Sloan, New Pornographers, C’mon, Small Sins, and Cursed. D’Arcy also put a Monks’ Bad Habits tribute album together, Ford is also featured on. Ford is currently at work writing new songs for collaboration with Ian Lloyd of Stories – Ford-Lloyd.
Larry, Friends and Family (LF&F) is a progressive folk-rock band formed in the early 1970’s as a drum-less acoustic ensemble playing original and period music featuring multi-part harmonies. As college students, LF&F performed live and recorded an album of original songs entitled “Cycles” in 1972, which remained unreleased as the band drifted apart, with members focused on careers and families. Although the members remained friends in the ensuing years, the music was just a memory. During an annual gathering, a few songs were played and the dream of performing again and actually releasing the album was born. After a small delay of 38 years, “Cycles” was digitally re-mastered and released in 2010. LF&F has reunited for select live performances, including opening for the Acoustic Strawbs at the Strand Theater in Lakewood, NJ.
