The Story:
In March of 2012, Just People began a web-hosted campaign on KickStarter.com to raise $15,000 to record their first professional album. Having made all their previous recordings over the years on a very limited budget in time sensitive environments, the band felt that their studio work was not living up to the energy and professionalism that they brought to the stage during their live performances. Their audience agreed.
After one month of fund raising, Just People was able to surpass their initial goal of $15,000, and begin recording what most would consider their debut album. With the help of their very talented and good friends Christopher Worth and David Rueda, they put together a plan that would allow them to get the most productivity and quality out of the money they had available. Starting at “Rain City Studios” in Tigard, OR, the band began the four month process of tracking the sixteen songs that they would whittle down to the final eleven on the album. Some of it was done in the basement of their own house, some in a little old cottage tucked in the woods of Lake Oswego, and most of it was in a beautiful spot in NW Portland known as “Cloud City Sound”. The journey was long, but the band was not alone.
With the help of Justin Phelps (Cake, The Mars Volta), a regular at Cloud City, as well as the tireless dedication of David Rueda and Christopher Worth the band put together an album that was ready to be mastered. So, with a few trips up to Seattle, WA to work with Ed Brooks (Pearl Jam, The Shins) and get tracks mastered, the musical components of the album were done in late September 2012. The next step was to perfect the visual art that would encase the music.
At Just People's annual spring Prom at The Star Theater the band's longtime friend Dane Eisenbart painted them a nautilus while they played their set and it became the icon of the new album. As a symbol of strength, beauty, and perfection unchanged by time, the nautilus represents a mathematical equation that binds all life together and can be found in countless examples in nature. With the visual icon of the music chosen, the band called on Riannah Weaver to design the rest of the packaging, and by late November the album was all ready to go to print. With only 1,000 of the original prints of “Light/Weight” in existence, these initial copies are a unique piece of art that you can purchase at the Album Release Party and experience the story of Just People and “Light/Weight”.
The Entertainment:
::JUST PEOPLE::
Just People are the dedicated offspring of a generation of movers
and shakers. Take the eloquence of Bob Dylan, mixed with the
sheer power of Led Zeppelin, add a dash of The Beatles and for a
nice after taste throw in some Talking Heads. The result is best
described by Darcy Wallace of the Oregon Voice: “JUST PEOPLE are
tough to pin down, but damn it, it just sounds so good.”
Just People will perform their new album “Light/Weight” in its entirety as well as some other songs to keep everyone dancing before and after.
