YES I CAN "Unity Through Music & Education" is a 501 c(3) Non profit organization. The Summer Meltdown becomes possible through efforts of its volunteers. Many sponsors play important roles in donations and production materials, and the Summer Meltdown Autism Awareness & Social Inclusion Concert would not be what it is today without this generosity. Both the YES I CAN program and the Summer Meltdown continue to grow and thrive thanks to the support from students, staff, community members, organizations, and corporations.
ssssYES I CAN "Unity Through Music & Education", held its first autism awareness and social inclusion concert in 2004 at The City of Santa Clarita's Community Activity Center, and for the past five years have been developing it at the Golden Valley High School 2,000-seat outdoor amphitheater.
ssssThe goal of the Summer Meltdown is to provide an age-appropriate event, open to the community, to promote autism awareness and social inclusion while providing an opportunity for the students of YES I CAN to practice the skills they've learned throughout the program: goal setting, team work, self determination, communication & social skills, etc.
ssssThe benefit to the community is a concert experience that teens appreciate and enjoy together, with opportunities to learn from and support local businesses, non-profits, and school clubs. Through the event, attendees will learn about the YES I CAN program, and will realize that special education students enrolled in the program are capable of throwing a concert of the same caliber as the professionals. This will help promote social integration between students of all ability levels.
ssssThe benefit to the YES I CAN students is the opportunity to work together to throw a successful event, to build social connections and promote social acceptance, to build greater self-esteem and feelings of self-worth, and to practice significant life skills such as planning, organizing, budgeting and collaboration.
ssssNon-disabled teens will have the opportunity to understand and value the contributions of the students with disabilities and include them in future social activities.
ssssActivities at the Summer Meltdown include rocking out to musical artists, perusing the various non-profit and community booths, and enjoying the many food and beverage sponsors.
