The fourth annual festival organised by the Master Musicians of Joujouka takes place in their village of Joujouka/Jajouka from 10-12 June 2011. The festival began in 2008 when the Master Musicians held a festival to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of Rolling Stones founder Brian Jones recording in the village in 1968. the subsequent LP "Brian Jones presents The Pipes of Pan at Joujouka" was released in 1971 on Rolling Stones Re...cords. Jones died in 1969 and the LP was a tribute to Jones from his band mates and was the first release on the Rolling Stones own label. It is fast becoming an annual pilgrimage for Joujouka fans, fans and practitioners of avant garde music, and those who wish to hear traditional Sufi trance music played in its natural setting.
This festival is unique as all guests will stay with the musicians and their families in their homes and experience three days and nights of ritual Sufi music in its natural setting. All food is cooked and sourced in Joujouka.
Guests will experience life in Joujouka staying with the musicians and their families in their isolated village. The Master Musicians of Joujouka will play in intimate sessions around their madrassa/school. The highlight of the festival will be the village’s celebration of the Boujeloud ritual. Guests will be collected from Ksar El Kebir the nearest town to Joujouka on Friday 10th June and will be brought to the village. Full board will be provided. Food will be prepared in traditional Joujouka fashion from locally sourced products.
