Jerod Tate is the guest Composer-in-Residence and Composition Instructor for the 2014 Oklahomans Without Limitations (OWL) Camp.
The theme of this year’s camp is MUSIC!
NewView hosts several activities throughout the year for blind and visually impaired children and youth throughout Oklahoma, with our Oklahomans Without Limitations (OWL) Summer Camp as the foundation of this program.
OWL Camp is a free, week-long summer camp for children ages 8-18 who are blind or vision impaired. OWL Camp began in 2000, and has grown to 30-40 visually-impaired campers each July. Each camper is teamed with a sighted peer counselor who provides encouragement, assistance, and friendship. Camp activities are carefully planned and designed to encourage collaboration, improve confidence, self-esteem, and independence, and challenge societal and self-imposed limits through a variety of indoor and outdoor activities in an accessible environment. The focus is on capability rather than disability. New activities are added each year to keep things new and challenging for returning campers. Camp favorites have included swimming, beep-ball, fishing, archery, arts and crafts, martial arts, shopping trips, basketball, hay rides, rock climbing, kayaking and dragon boat rowing on the Oklahoma River, and of course, our annual talent show.
The 2014 Oklahomans Without Limitations (OWL) Camp will be held July 21-25, 2014 on the campus of the University of Central Oklahoma. The camp is open to 8-18 year olds with a visual impairment. NewView raises funds to cover the costs for the camp and no fee is charged to vision impaired children to ensure that every child has the chance to participate.
