On Thursday 19 June, Choro das 3 will play at Christo’s Pizzeria as part of their 3-month tour of the US.
Choro das 3 is a Brazilian instrumental group of three sisters and their father who first started to play as a band in 2003. Corina, 25, plays flute and piccolo. Lia, 23, plays 7-string guitar. Elisa, 20, plays mandolin, banjo, clarinet and piano. Their father, Eduardo, plays pandeiro (the Brazilian tambourine).
The group specializes in a genre known as choro, which originated in Rio de Janeiro in the 19th Century and which occupies a place in Brazilian culture roughly equivalent to jazz. As little as ten years ago, choro was mostly played by older musicians and was in danger of dying out. Choro das 3 took it as their mission to keep choro alive. They studied at the feet of the old masters, some of whom had played with the founders of choro, such as Pixinguinha and Jacob do Bandolim.
They have been hailed by critics in Brazil and abroad, who have said of their music: “interpretations of extreme creativity... a wonderful job of preservation and at the same time, renovation and modernization of Choro” (Toninho Spessoto, Blog Acordes); “Choro das 3 . . . represents the newest and most talented music in the Brazilian landscape” (Bom Dia); and "some of the most inspired and inspiring music . . . the highest level of musicianship and presentation,” (American Mandolinist Mike Marshall).
The Tom Bergeron Brasil Band will open the show with a short set of their own choro repertoire.
