One of the premiere finger style guitarists of our time, Richard Smith, and his partner in life and music, the versatile and talented cellist Julie Adams, are returning to Jacksonville for an evening of jazz standards, gypsy swing, Scott Joplin Rags, and Chet Atkins-style guitar picking.
The duo – Smith originally from England and Adams from Ohio – currently live on the outskirts of the Music City, Nashville. Since 2000, the husband-and-wife team have toured around the world, surprising audiences with Richard’s guitar genius and Julie’s lyrical style on the cello. With Richard’s ability to quickly master the varying styles of guitar greats including Django Reinhardt, Les Paul, Chet Atkins, and Tommy Emmanuel, there seems to be no limit to what he can accomplish on his guitar. Richard first met the “godfather of finger style guitar,” Chet Atkins, when Smith was just 11 years old, and Atkins invited him to perform on the stage with him at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London in front of an audience of about a thousand. Both the audience and Atkins sat stunned and applauded with wild enthusiasm for the young guitar virtuoso. By the time he reached his early twenties, both Chet Atkins and guitarist Jerry Reed began to refer to Richard Smith as their guitar “hero.” Apart from his virtuosity on the guitar, Richard is also an accomplished banjo and violin player. One of the most diverse and talented cellists on the music scene today, Julie Adams was classically trained at the Interlochen Center for the Arts and the Cincinnati Conservatory. Julie is also a Nashville session player and has been featured on a wide range of projects, from top ten albums to major film scores. In 2005, Julie performed with country legend Suzy Boggus on her album Beautiful Dreamer, which won the 2005 Grammy for Folk Album of the Year. Together, with Julie’s emotional depth and Richard’s flawless technique, they embark on a musical journey that leaves their audiences cheering with much deserved appreciation for this remarkable duo.
