It’s all about the rock’n’roll for The Rob Skane 3.
This Albany-based trio plays some of the coolest original power pop songs around, as well as timeless rock songs by the likes of The Beatles, Rockpile, Chuck Berry, Elvis Costello, and Cheap Trick.
Skane’s latest record, “Phantom Power Trip” "http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/RobSkane1" received rave reviews from local, regional and national critics, including Babysue, Absolute Powerpop and Albany online music blog Nippertown "http://www.nippertown.com/" , which described it as “Full of confidence, burn-into-your-brain hooks and grown-up insights.”
The Rob Skane 3 (guitarist Skane, drummer Phil Lanz, bassist Mike Lisi) was formed by Skane, a solo singer/songwriter who pulled the band together to push “Power Trip.” But Skane, who quickly recruited old friend Lanz, had difficulty finding a bass player that clicked. That is, until Skane contacted Lisi, a Syracuse expatriate and longtime pal, who joined in early 2012.
Though they’ve only been out for a short time, the RS3 has already made a splash in the Albany music scene, lining up an array of gigs ranging from cool bar shows at places like Troy’s Ale House and Albany’s Pauly’s Hotel to an October showcase at The Egg "http://www.theegg.org/"
“This band has been a blast!,” Skane said. “This is the band I’ve always wanted to be in.”
Skane has been writing biting pop songs since his days as a young, gum-chewing wisecracker in Central New York. He migrated to the Albany area in the early 1990 and promptly linked with feisty Albany alt-rock act The Dugans. The Dugans, one of Albany’s top bands in the mid-1990s, toured the U.S. with The Silos and shared a 45rpm single with The Young Fresh Fellows (“Yankee Magazine” b/w “Seattle, Washington”) in 1995.
Skane and Lanz shared other bands before amicably parting ways. Skane went the singer/songwriter route while Lanz cut a record with Albany-based alt-rockers 500 Hats before joining rock’n’roll icon Chubby Checker’s touring band. They reconnected a few years ago via Facebook—which is how Skane contacted Lisi—who Skane first met in the late 1980s when Lisi was music editor at Syracuse arts and entertainment paper, the Syracuse New Times.
Lisi, a Syracuse native, spent most of the Big `80s as lead singer/bassist for Syracuse roots rock heroes The Cause. The Cause released one single (“They’re Waiting for You” b/w “Hero”) notable because it was produced by Ed Hamell from Hamell on Trial. Lisi, who moved to the Albany area in 1990, played with several Albany-area acts, including 1990s rockers C. Jane Run "http://www.cdbaby.com/Artist/CJaneRun" , and most recently, 3 Minute Pop!
As the Rob Skane 3, the trio isn’t aiming for world domination—yet. Actually, they’d be quite content with a fat record deal, lots of gigs, and one of those cushy luxury tour buses. The first step is in early 2013, when they head to the studio to record their debut album.
But all they really want to do is rock.
“We wanna go out and tear it up,” said Lisi. “It’s what we love to do.”
