MEMFix Highland-Walker: Plan, Explore, and Activate the University Area On April 13, 2013
The City’s second MEMFix event will highlight the potential and the future vision of the University District.
MEMFix Highland -Walker is an event aimed at showcasing what is possible at the intersection of Highland St. and Walker Ave. by providing examples of how the neighborhood can become more pedestrian friendly. Building on the success of last November’s MEMFix Cleveland Street, the Highland-Walker event will activate the street with pop-up retail, music and art while introducing new ways for pedestrians to interact with the neighborhood. This peek into the street’s potential future will be Saturday April 13, 2013 from 10am-6pm.
The MEMFix Highland-Walker event is being presented by the University Neighborhood Development Corporation (UNDC), the University District Business Alliance (UDBA), neighborhood businesses, residents, and University of Memphis students. The MEMFix concept, piloted by the Mayor’s Innovation Deliver Team, draws local inspiration from the successful “A New Face for an Old Broad” event held on Broad Ave. in November of 2010. “A New Face for an Old Broad” drew thousands of people to the neighborhood and has been cited as a contributor to the recent investment and increase in new businesses opening on Broad Avenue.
MEMFix Highland-Walker is a free family-friendly event and open to anyone interested in exploring and re-thinking this Memphis neighborhood. Area retailers and restaurants will have planned specials for the day. There will also be a variety of vendors and pop-up shops, a kid’s activity area, mini parks, a beer garden and more. Music and performances kick off at 11a at the Main Stage on Highland Ave.
Parking will be free at University of Memphis Patterson St. lots and in designated street spaces. There is also a valet for your bike on the west side of Highland at Walker.
