Peace good people,
I know many of you are wondering what in the world Be Heard is all about. Well we are glad you asked!
Firstly, let's get some background on the organization hosting the preliminaries! Mercado La Paloma is an economic development project of Esperanza Community Housing Corporation.
And Esperanza Community Housing Corporation works to achieve comprehensive and long-term community development in the Figueroa Corridor neighborhood of South-Central Los Angeles. Community residents of all ages and ethnicities are the foundation of Esperanza’s grassroots work.
So now that you have an idea of the folks behind the scene...the idea for the Be Heard Artist Showcase was born out of a growing need to provide space and support for local performing artists to grow their professional capacity. Coupling access to music industry resources (The GRAMMY Museum) with relationships with a cadre of up and coming artists (Mercado La Paloma) the program seeks to create a pathway for interested local artists to pursue a career in the performing arts. This is a natural extension of the mission of Esperanza Community Housing to create entrepreneurship opportunities for members of our community by identifying and cultivating their natural skills and abilities.
We have been hosting preliminary showcases since February of 2012 and have seen some of the cities best performers!
We advanced 7 artist from out of the series of semi finals and do we have a treat for you!?
Let's meet the artist...
Kandi Cole :: Kandi Cole is a brick solid product of the culture she chooses to represent. In blatant Hip-Hop fashion, one would describe her prowess as follows; “…imagine Da Brat & Busta Rhymes got together at Auntie Lyte & Uncle Dilla’s house for Sunday dinner and cooked up a MONSTER!”
I mean, need i say more?!
Mars Gana :: In a world where music with substance is hidden deep underground, Mars Gana emerges on today’s scene with philosophical lyrics, melodic, soul lifting ambience and artful, sub-conscious, musical progression meant to stimulate the soul, awaken the mind and inspire her generation and many to come.
Sheldon Botler :: Soul singer Sheldon Botler was born in the Central District of Seattle, Washington. His music has been described by fans as "heart warming", "an out of body experience" and "a timeless treasure." With original lyrics and melodies, Botler has begun to wow the Seattle scene and is now bringing that sound to Los Angeles!
Adjoa Skinner :: Adjoa Skinner is a vocalist, multi-instrumentalist & song writer based in Los Angeles, CA. Born into a family of musicians in Buffalo, NY. Skinner started in Musical Theater at the age of 2, went on to be a session vocalist at the age of 7, and by 12 was the featured vocalist in local Jazz Ensembles. After studying classical voice in New York choirs with some of the country's best vocal professors she went on to live in East, South and West Africa for nearly 2 years where she received the name Adjoa and helped pioneer a school of Music as a student and a professor, teaching private lessons in voice, piano, & flute. All in all, Adjoa is the total package and is moving not only herself but everyone she is connected with towards their destiny.
Clive Aden :: When you hear your first Clive Aden's song, you will know that you have experienced a unique sound and a powerful voice. Clive’s work is a product of his life experiences, combined with a sharp wit and humor. But what really fuels Clive’s fire is his irrepressible drive to create and express, to write, to sing, and shout out loud. Clive’s music tells the stories of all of us - stories of the good times, of the struggles and pain, and ultimately, the dreams we all share.
Cliff Beach :: Cliff is a talented, trained singer, songwriter, & keyboardist. He gives his all on the stage to fans. Known for his grit, soul and wild sense of humor, he leaves anyone who sees him in a better mood then when they came. Definite, must see! His facebook sums it all up in on sentence...
"Whatever he plays it’s got to be funky!"
William Hawkins :: William Hawkins doesn't just write songs, his life is a song and the music he shares is an unfolding love story. Born into a musical family, it took William a while to find his own music. It wasn’t until in college that William found his way with words through poetry. In order to add some spark to his poems William decided to start playing guitar while reading his poetry. Those poems quickly turned into songs and he hasn't stopped writing since. A modern day virtuoso, William has the keen ability to captivate audiences through whatever medium he chooses.
