Singer, songwriter, recording artist and actor September Penn has traveled across America, to the Middle East and as far as China, helping to share Dr. Martin Luther King's message of non-violence through song. Since 2005, September has been a part of the cast of Passages of Martin Luther King, a play written by Stanford University History Professor Dr. Clayborne Carson, who was commissioned by Coretta Scott King to edit the King papers. Carson has regularly asked September to participate in Passages as a lead vocalists and music director, including during the international premiere of the play in Beijing, China, in June 2007. As one of the singers, she performed with the National Theater Company of China for the play, winning standing ovations after each of the five performances. She also has played the roles of Coretta Scott King and Alberta “Bunch” King. In March 2011, September lead a six-member vocal troupe in performances of Passages with the Palestinian National Theater in Jerusalem, Jenin, Nablus and Bethlehem. For this inspiring event, September performs the Civil Rights Movements songs from the play and shares experiences from her travels to the Middle and Far East.
