If Jimmy Hendrix officiated the union of The Dead Weather and The Grimm Brothers, and they had a sweet baby child, it'd be Scheming Scarlet. Scheming Scarlet is an antique circus, a magical entertainment act coming soon to a town near you. Their content is a combination of literature, theater and fairytale mashed with pop-punk-meets-‘70s hard rock. The lyrics, a colorful mix of relatable story lines and unsettling fantasy, are sung with authority and power and hit like an exotic creature Anthony Bourdain would eat (and then blog about in great detail). So how was their “Hendrix meets The Dead Weather meets The Grimm Brothers” sound created? Meet the band! Susan Purdy (lead vox, acoustic guitar, various percussion): Susan first learned she could sing when she was cast as Mother Nature in her 4th grade school production. She feverishly wrote folk songs throughout her school career, learned both the alto sax and guitar, and was influenced by a range of musicians from Alanis Morissette to Jack White and Joni Mitchell. After several failed attempts to form a band with friends, Susan looked into the one resource she had left – Craigslist. The great match with Alex and James was practically immediate, and a short time after, the brand new Sacramento band, Scheming Scarlet, gave birth to its first song: Little Red. Alex Gimelli (lead guitar, backing vox) was nicknamed “the Godfather” thanks to his Italian genes, even though he’s the baby of the band. He picked up piano so fast as a child that his music teacher had to put blank pieces of paper in front of him at recitals to make it look like he was reading sheet music. Influenced by ‘70s guitar greats like Jimi Hendrix and Robin Trower, Alex soon switched to electric guitar and to this day has never taken a single guitar lesson. He and James met in high school and again in college where James asked Alex to audition for the lead guitarist in his band. After that project ended, the close friends set out looking for new band mates and, well, you know the rest. James Crum Jr. (bass) gave music a shot when his music teacher pushed him into joining the worship band. With Zeppelin, The Who and Eric Clapton hosting a party in his head, James made beautiful music to God. His love of 1970s funk soon made way to hard core rock, then traveled back in time to classic rock before Plant forced him to invite jazz to the party as well. Other than slappin' da bass, James spends his time working with his hands, using great finesse to fine tune diesel trucks. Ladies...? Give their pre-production & live tracks a listen for a sneak peak at the Scheming Scarlet freak show! Studio EP is in the works!
