Sam Anning / Press

“SINCE moving from Perth 3½ years ago, Sam Anning has become the most in-demand bassist on Melbourne's jazz scene, playing with around 50 bands. For Anning's farewell gig he featured with his own quartet, offering listeners a rare opportunity to appreciate his writing as well as his playing. Most of the originals in the program were composed in the past year. His sound on the bass (warm, expansive and effortlessly full-bodied), coupled with an unerring sense of time and swing, is what makes Anning's playing so persuasive. As the concert concluded, Anning thanked his musicians and the audience, concluding with, ''See you when I get back.'' I have a feeling that won't be happening soon. A promising future in New York awaits.”
