Description Hello Friends and Family, This letter is one letter I find very difficult to write, however I feel must get the word out, because someone I love very much has been afflicted with a life threatening disease - esophageal cancer. Most of you know Chuck Harteg. Chuck has lived in Whitmore Lake area for over 20 years. Much of those years have been spent helping others. A few of his accomplishments include, serving as president of the Whitmore Lake Athletic Association (found new and innovative ways to raise money for the various high school athletic teams), Chair for Harvest Festival Get Rescued (spending endless hours preparing for this event which helps homeless animals from around Michigan), Habitat for Humanity (volunteered and served on their steering committee, and coordinating workers on the various new home builds and remodels), endless servant of God, Pastor/Parish/Staff Relations chair at Wesley United Methodist Church. Chuck has put in countless hours maintaining the grounds and landscaping at Wesley, in an effort to make a more beautiful and serene setting for the church and our community. Not to mention heading up fundraisers for various organizations and groups. Perhaps most of all, Chuck has been a huge support system for those in need, whether it be lending a hand, or an ear, you can always count on him. Chuck has been my friend and confidante for over 13 years. He has wiped away many tears, and has made me laugh in my darkest hour. No words can express how much I value our friendship which has grown and blossomed over the years. When I received Chuck’s message that day, telling me he had cancer, I thought my heart stopped. I can’t begin to tell you all my thoughts and fears. As many of you know, I always think the worst. My thoughts went from, what am I going to do without him, to how am I going to deal with this. I couldn’t stand the thought of being without him. We always think our loved ones will be with us forever, and that we’ll grow old together. I cried so hard I couldn’t call him right back. I didn’t know what to say. I waited a few hours and pulled myself together, then went to see him. I felt he deserved my time, not just a phone call. I was so numb; I don’t really remember the short drive. When I arrived we cried, but just a short time, because if you know Chuck, that’s not him. Mr. Personality. “I’ll deal with whatever comes my way”, he says. Chuck, the simple pillar of faith; a faith that he has shared with me over the last thirteen years. Then, as always, he made me laugh, turning my negative into positive. That’s so Chuck. Instead of me comforting him, there he was comforting me. Not only is he my pillar of strength, he is our community’s pillar; a huge part of all that’s good in Whitmore Lake. Next week Chuck will meet with his surgeon and oncology, to discuss the stage of his cancer and suggested treatment. As he prepares to deal with his disease, we as community, friends and family, need to do a role reversal. Just as Chuck has always been there for us, we now need to be there for him and his family. Therefore, I have put together a fundraiser called “What The Chuck” Bowling Fundraiser which will take place on March 31, 2012 from 8:00 p.m. to close. Whitmore Lanes and Lounge have donated all facilities to Chuck. Power Lab have donated their musical talents for a night filled with dining and dancing. Wesley United Methodist Church will be doing a bake sale. Friends and family are putting together a Silent Auction and Chinese Auction, along with this there will be a $5.00 admittance charge. I would like to explain the bowling part. Each lane is $1,000 with four bowlers. Each bowler needs to raise $250.00 in sponsors. You can get ten $25.00 sponsors or 5 $50.00 sponsors, etc. Four bowlers per team at $250 each = $1,000 per lane. Or you can pay for the sponsor fee yourself, it doesn’t matter. This is an easy and fast way to raise money . Most of you know the cost of treatment, time off work for not only Chuck, but Sue will also have time off to care for Chuck through his healing process. I’m asking all of you to help, please help me, help my loved one, by donating to, or putting together a team, as Chuck would be the first one there for us. Please feel free to contact me at 734-637-0680 for donations or for further information on “What the Chuck” Bowling Fundraiser. Please save the Date March 31st at 8:00. God Bless, Michelle Petoskey
