"The Best of 2012: A List of Albums & Bands You Need to Know "here’s my rundown of the best stuff from 2012. I’ll start with the albums of 2012, and if you don’t know, I split this list in two sections; LP’s and EP’s I’ll begin with the former, and after my top ten picks, I’ll have every single other record I bought mentioned, too. After all, the whole reason I do this blog in the first place is to spread the word about great, independent music, and that can’t be done effectively if I only promote ten of albums I purchased during the last twelve months. I was able to narrow my picks down to a “Sweet 16”, and having to cut out six stellar records proved to be harder than I thought. But in the end, this is what I came up with (In Alphabetical Order)... Artist: Pistol Whippin’ Ike Album: Dying The Dream Must Listen Song: “Last Cigarette” "

"As the curtain started opening, guitarists, Barry Lorberbaum and Jason Rutledge, bassist, Alex Fowler, and drummer, Jeff Hathcock, tore into the first song of their 42-minute set, “Life As We Know”. Just one song deep and they already seemed like a completely different PWI than what I had seen before. They appeared even more focused and driven, and had even stepped their stage show a few notches I’ve seen Pistol Whippin’ Ike more than a few times, and have always thought they were great. But with this show, it’s like they tapped into a whole new well of potential and possibility. Mario was even more ferocious as a frontman than I’ve seen him act in the past. And Jason, Barry, Alex and Jeff all appeared to have added just a little extra slickness to their talents, which really helped in tightening things up"

“November 26, 2010 - Black Friday. Pistol Whippin’ Ike Style This was the best show I’ve seen PWI do, and it’s obvious working on the new record isn’t the only thing they’ve been doing in their off time. They’ve always been really good shows, but it was different tonight. It had evolved if you will. Lead guitarist, Barry Lorberbaum, is always entertaining to watch, and is really a great guitarist. And tonight rhythm guitarist, Jason Rutledge, seemed better, almost on the same level as Barry. And Mario just had it going on tonight. He’s one of those frontmen that most other frontmen should strive to be. ”

“August 20, 2010 - Pistol Whippin’ Ike The Bone, down in Deep Ellum, was hosting some rock acts on their upstairs outdoor patio, and the only local Texas band on the bill, Pistol Whippin’ Ike, was opening up. They opened up with “Awakening”, which was one of just a few old songs that they did, and also serves as an great opening song. “Open up my eyes…” Mario sang out as the rest of the band then came in. And come on, an opening line like that is a real attention getter.”

“April 16, 2010 - "...Open Your Mind to a Revolution..." Pistol Whippin Ike Pistol Whippin’ Ike was back, and they were in the studio working on a new album! Since then they’ve played a few shows scattered about the clubs in Deep Ellum and even did a show in Austin during SXSW. And tonight it was time for another hometown show. The show was seriously amazing, and they all put incredible amounts of energy into it. What I really think is the best feature of the band is Mario Cadena’s voice, he has a slight accent which makes his phenomenal sounding voice even better. Make no mistake, Ike is back and they’re better than ever! ”
