For those of you who missed knowing Terry "Big T" Lair, I cannot tell you how unfortunate you are.
I was blessed with his friendship in 1984 when he came to work for TXO Production in Fairfield, TX.
Big T was a big man, I once heard of him lifting a 55 gallon full drum of chemical into the back of a pickup truck by himself, probably why he had a bad back later in life.
He was my friend, hunting buddy, road trip buddy, hell, he was my brother, and I loved him that way. He never met a stranger, and it seemed all people loved him with his bigger than Texas smile, full of pure Texas bullshit lines for the girls, and dozens of the funniest stories you would ever hear. Not sure all them were true, but he swore they were! And man, could he BBQ! Has his own BBQ sauce he was trying to market...
In December, I helped throw him his 50th birthday party. It was a huge success, but I felt he was not happy. He was going through some painful situations at home, was seeing a friend, but the guilt of all that was very hard on him.
I had hoped all was well with him midway thru January. He seemed much happier, but then I got the call from my Dad that Big T had passed away while helping a friend do some work.
The world lost a very fine treasure that day and I have been all but lost since.
We are having a Chili Cook-Off in his honor in Fairfield, TX, about 90 miles south of Dallas on I45, on October 1st and 2nd. The proceeds will go to Big T's Buddies, a not for profit Autism Charity, as his grandson was diagnosed with Autism.
If you get a chance to make the cook off, please do, it's for a great casue and a great person.
Lots of things to do, music from some Texas Country bands both Friday and Saturday, horse shoe pitchin', and lots to eat for just $10...
