Orphaned at birth and stigmatized by his village, Abdel Halim Hafez turned to music. He grew up in an orphanage and at age 14, he joined the Egyptian Music Institute, and learned to play multiple instruments. His first break came as a last-minute draft to substitute for a singer in On-The-Air performance; only to be heard by a famous radio broadcast supervisor who offered him a record deal and served as his mentor. At the peak of his success, he lost his beloved fiancée to a chronic illness; a tragedy he never recovered from and is reflected on his heartfelt throbbing songs. All through his life, he struggled with a water-born parasitic disease (Schistosomiasis), which took his life from liver failure at age 47 in Kings College Hospital in London on March 30th, 1977. It's not the flowers, or the presents, or the party that matter. It's the spiritual appeal that someone is bearing witness to their life and is willing to honor them on their special day.
