Wowzers… The Bergamot Tour Starts Next Week!

The weeks are slipping by. We have four days until we kick off the national tour at Mid-Point Music Festival. I have a checklist of over 60 things that need to be done before we hit the road singing. I feel a bit overwhelmed at times, then quickly revert back to what my yoga teacher said to do when stressed, ” just take in deep full breaths, very deep breaths”. It seems to work…ewhen I remember to deeply breath. :)

Let me recap on this week starting with last Sunday September 12th 2010.

Sunday September 12th 2010: Nate and I left our region around 1:07 AM to drive to Chicago IL in order to be on WGN Chicago’s Radio Station by 3AM their time. During the trip I was fully awake. Nate was having some troubles staying away so, we pulled off the side of the road and swapped seats. By the time we got into the city we had made a pit stop and had swapped seats again, he was fully awake now which was a good thing because I wasnt as familiar with driving in Chicago as he was. I began to get the video camera out and started getting some footage just as we entered the city. Eventually, you will be able to see the footage, I am in the process of making it into a video blog! We finally found the Tribune Tower where WGN Radio is located. After entering the building we were hyped up. A heavy anticipation surrounded the air we breathed in and stepped into the Green Room. I had both the video camera and a hand held camera with me taking photos. By this point in our lives this was the second time we had been in the Green Room, our first time to WGN Radio was in January 2010 before Smile came out. We tuned up the guitar and I went through my vocal warm up routine then it was show time. We met our host Brian Noonan, who was a comedian, soon after chatting for a couple minute we realized that this was going to be a fun interview. It was a very, very fun interview. We sang 4 songs live and were found laughing in between the songs at Brian’s comments. After the show we drove down Lake Shore to sleep at my cousins college “house”. After sleeping in till 11AM we said our goodbyes and went to explore the city before we had to babysit the most fun kids ever. We spent the later part of Sunday on the beach of Lake MI hanging out with these fun, energetic kids. It was a great finish to a 2o hour day.

Monday September 13th 2010: Recording Studio all day long. (We recorded 4 more tracks for The Haven)

Tuesday September 14th 2010: Recording Studio… working from 9AM- 3AM

Wednesday September 15th 2010: Recorded until 3PM…Drove to Fort Wayne for a Band Practice. We are ready for Mid-Point Music Festival. It was a good practice. After practice, we hung with my newly engaged sister, her soon to be Husband, and their baby dog Hazel. Very fun times were had. We drove back home and hit the hay.

Thursday September 16thth 2010: Recording more tracks ( with a focus on finding a Mastering Company and a laying down layered harmonies) We make a coffee house stop with Nates Mom it was her birthday… whoop whoop. More recording then out to dinner at The Mark.

Friday September 17th 2010: We continued recording with a huge focus on harmonies, we adjusted the levels and put proper equalization on the vocals too. Work, work, work…

Saturday September 18th 2010: I spent time with family. To fun.

Behind the Scenes with THE BERGAMOT!

Behind the Scenes with THE BERGAMOT!

Wondering what our life is like behind the scenes? Below are some pictures of how things go down in our lives. You will see us with friends, family, and fans!

Quick Update of The Bergamot’s Week:

Monday was Labor Day,September 6th: Nathan and I went and got some new live portable sound equipment from Woodwind and Brasswind. That was a fun excursion. We ended up playing violins, a stand up bass, and some really neat guitars! We may have created a new song from the day out.

Tuesday September 7th: We got on the road and drove to Chicago, IL to play a gig at The Elbo Room. We ate an amazing pre-show meal at a great Thai- Restaurant. Then we played to a just about full house :) , it was great! We finished the gig at 11PM and watched the next bands, by the time we got to our place of rest, it was 2:30AM. We got good shut eye in then explored Chicago.

Wednesday September 8th: Exploring Chicago was so fun. We went to the beach, through the park, to Intelligentsia Cafe, to an upscale thrift shop, and we got cupcakes at Molly’s Cupcake shop… OMG FANTASTIC! By 3:00PM we got out of there just in time to beat the crazy Chicago traffic! Thank God. On our way home I read Nathan excerpts out of the book Ripped:How the Wired Generation Revolutionized Music. This book spoke volumes to us, I highly recommend it to you if you are interested in how the digital world changed the face of the music industry, essentially overnight. Once we got back to our secret practice location. We practiced our original works and prepared to enter back into the studio.

Thursday September, 9th: Recording, recording, recording… and creative writing took place. :) A good day.

Friday September 10th: And more recording… It is sounding pure, and organic, smooth, and sultry… with a couple of surprises sprinkled throughout. Soon The Haven .. :) will exist in the world of listeners.

Saturday September, 11th: Break from recording.. ND game, chicken fry, baking a CHOCOLATE TEXAS SHEET CAKE and fun family time.Oh… how could I almost forget, Nate and I are driving to Chicago, IL to be interviewed and play live music on the WGN Radio station. We are going to leave at 1:30AM our time. The Show starts at 3:00AM in Chicago. I will post a link on this site as soon as I can.

The information in the below post was taken out of an interview I did with the owner and personal friend of a company called Wear to Win http://www.weartowin.com/

From My lips…

I started singing when I was 2 years old. (In the privacy of my home and for preschool shows ) My mother “Marla” got me into singing, she has a beautiful voice and she would sing to me and my older sister all the time. She was one of the first people to ever encouraged me to sing. My first distinct memory of singing a solo in public took place in 3rd grade. My choir teacher selected me to sing a solo part for the song, “Yesterday “by The Beatles. After many days of trying to convince my teacher that he had chosen the wrong person to sing the solo (I did this because I was deathly afraid of singing in public, I was a very shy girl). Eventually, I gave in and sang it (this happened after much cohesion by my parents and the teacher). To my surprise it went great! I didn’t mess it up, trip, drop the mic, or have hiccups during the song. All of my fears did not come true. Now, looking back upon that time, I laugh, its funny to recall how shy I was. My shyness affected my life in a great way for a long time. Initially, when I would sing in public I would shake, I would shake so bad that when I held up the lyrics I could not read them. After many years of facing my fear my deep rooted love for singing and supportive family lifted me through my fears and inhibitions. Praise God for that. As the years continued I broke out of my fears. Mind you it took years of forcing myself to sing in public before I got to a high level of comfort on stage. Currently, I LOVE PERFORMING and I am no longer shy. Also, I went to college on a full ride for golf. I just graduated from college, with a Double major in: Media and Public Communication and Interpersonal Relationship Communication and a Peace and Conflicts Minor, this past May 2010 and currently I am a full time musician/singer-songwriter. For the last 6 years I have been performing with Nathan Hoff (who is my boyfriend and was a Division One Golfer too). Within the last year we named our group, The Bergamot. This fall we are going on a National Tour! For more info on that you can visit our website, www.thebergamot.com. -You are certainly following your dreams! What words of advice do you have for girls following theirs?

J: I would start by sharing that life may not always give you a good hand or seem fair, especially when pursuing your dreams. So make sure when you follow your dreams that along the way you are having fun. When pursuing your dreams be true to yourself and your creator. Be sure to recognize when you are pursuing your dreams it is very important to have a yearning passion to help others through your talents and deep down in the pit of your soul make sure you are following your dreams because you have that yearning passion to help others, not a sole passion to fill up your bank account. Never, lose faith in yourself or humanity. Be patient, continue to try, continue to be better, learn from your mistakes. Did you know that it took inventor Thomas Edison 1,000 unsuccessful attempts at inventing the light bulb. When a reporter asked, “How did it feel to fail 1,000 times?” Edison replied, “I didn’t fail 1,000 times. The light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps.” I love this quote because it displays how important determination is. Imagine if Edison would have stopped at 999, we probably would not have lights today. In conclusion, be strong, flow your heart, and give your talents to the world in hopes that you can inspire others to live life in a more profound way. Be the change you wish to see in the world. Follow your dreams to make the world a better place, and everything will be OK. :)

Random Tid-Bit

Random Tid-Bit: We came up with the band name The Bergamot because the real fruit that’s oil is used in Earl Gray Tea and as as essential oil that is meant to induce happiness and relive stress. We as musicians seek to brighten up our audiences lives, which is why the name The Bergamot is a perfect fit, its origin and purpose coincides with ours as musicians. Its all good!

Preparing for “The Bergamot’s” National Tour

Hello Friends!

Let me begin by saying welcome to the first ever BERGAMOT BLOG! We found it necessary to create it in order to keep you updated on our life adventures. This BLOG has been a long time coming. We are excited to keep you filled in as we embark on a new and exciting chapter of our journey. May I forewarn you that this will be a real blog, that expresses the things that currently are consuming our lives. You will find all sorts of interesting topics within this blog-space. The topics will range from our music, the tour, songwriting, tips on different aspects of music, the joy’s , the sorrows, the frustrations, and the love of life. Most of all we will make sure you are entertained!

Each day, Nathan and I have been working diligently to tie up loose-ends before we hit the road. I have spent a large percentage of today getting T-Shirts made. Also, In between a bunch of running errands a small 1 year old toy poodle turned up on our door step, she was found lost on the golf course near our home, so my mother and I took care of her and looked for her owner. Luckily for my father( who was getting nervous that my mother and I would want to add the lost dog to our family “in which we already have 2 dogs”), the owner found us ( the owners are a sweet husband and wife around the age of 79) . Additionally, I managed to renew my library card ” thank God”. At the library, I came across a book about blogging which renewed my interest and the urgency I felt about making a blog, ( which I am doing currently at 12:45 AM). Meanwhile, Nathan Hoff ( the guitarist of The Bergamot and my boyfriend of 6 years) spent the day working on numerous designs that will be used for our new business cards, car decals, and posters. He called multiple venues around the MI area and Chicago area and booked up some of the tours loose ends. Nate continued to send out important emails and managed to visit is grandparents during the later part of the day. Which leads me to now, I just got of the phone with him and we were talking about how to balance life and work and how Sufjan Stevens will be playing a show at the crowfoot ( http://www.thecrofoot.com/) this was a relevant topic because we will be playing at the crowfoot the night before he does, pretty sweet!

I hope you will continue to read our blog and stay in touch with whats up on our side of the woods. Feel free to comment on our blogs too.

May grace find you today and peace lighten your life tomorrow,

- Jillian

PS we are coming out with a new Album this Fall called “The Haven”
