The story: 'Wisdom, better than muscle'

On a bright and sunny Spring day, in a blossoming small garden. There was a twenty-two year old, youthful woman by the name of Alfrida. Who learned and worked in this garden with a cheerful attitude, as knowledge and wisdom seemed to glow from Alfrida in all that she did.

Alfrida had four sisters who viewed her with green eyes, as they didn't like Alfrida and this forced her to spend full days out in this garden. But little did Alfrida know, all the small things that she worked on in this garden was preparing her for something bigger that would one day come her way.

One night, while everyone was asleep. A family of wolves snuck into the garden and began to eat the crops, killing some of the rabbits that Alfrida was taking care of in the garden.

When morning came, Alfrida awoke and went to the window to look out over her beautiful garden to see such destruction that the wolves had made. Devastated, Alfrida slowly backed away from the window seal and hurried down stairs to run out the house as her sisters laughed in the distance. Unable to bare the sight of all her hard work that had been destroyed, Alfrida ran back in to the house with her head in her hands and up to her room where she wept.

Soon Alfrida calmed down and she began to smile, when she started thinking about how the rabbits made her happy. Then suddenly Alfrida got an idea on how to save the rabbits that had survived from being killed next time and drive out the wolves for good. Hours went by for Alfrida, while she prepared and planned this idea into a strategy.

The next day, Alfrida executed this strategy and by night fall the wolves had returned, but never left. The next morning, when Alfrida awoke to spring out of bed to check on the garden and begin the restoration. Alfrida found dead wolves scattered all around the garden, but the crops and rabbits were unharmed.

When Alfrida's sisters found out, they laughed again and mocked her. The sisters then took photos of the dead wolves and posted then all around town, labeling Alfrida as "the wolf killer." But what was ment to be seen as images of humiliation, was actually seen as a heroic advertisement to the whole community that shared the same problem that Alfrida had solved.

When the mayor heard the news and saw one of "the wolf killer" advertisements for himself, he sent for Alfrida immediately. In the mayor's honor, Alfrida received an award for saving the rest of the town's harvest, live stock and solving the wolf problem. Then the mayor offered Alfrida a much bigger job in helping their military strategize a plan for an attack, and taking care of his 34,800 square meters garden. Alfrida humbly accepted the mayor's offer with great joy, as what her sisters ment for evil was turned to good.

The End.

Qualities: Striking, dramatic, sophisticated, distinctive and bold.

The story: ‘Got You Covered’

On a cold winter day, two soldiers by the name of Bob and Larry. Who are both soldiers in a search and rescue mission, and have crossed in to enemy territory to bring down an empire and set captives free as they crouch through an open field to get to a sand trap that is surrounded by trees. Where Bob and Larry take shelter there and lay low on their stomachs, while they wait for a word to go to come over the radio from their commander. Soldier number one, Bob, who is holding his gun out in front of him and appears to ready for any enemy attack. Whereas, soldier number two, Larry, who is holding a closed umbrella out in front of him as he appears to be ready for some other kind of attack. Bob looks over to Larry with a curious look on his face and says “Umm… so Larry, what’s with the umbrella.” “Oh, something told me to pack it. So I did, and left my gun behind, because I couldn’t take them both on this mission. But no worries, something also told me that I was going to be covered” Relied Larry. Larry then looks around and up with suspension in his eyes to say, “they’re coming.” Bob replies, “whose coming” frantically as he scopes out the scene through the scope of his gun. Larry says, “its about to rain.” He notices a sudden change in the weather, as thunder and rain drops follow his instincts. Larry quickly opens up his umbrella, as Bob sticks out his tongue and then his hand to catch a rain drop. Bob says to Larry, “uh, can you cover me?” Larry then scoots closer to Bob with his umbrella, as now both are covered by the umbrella. Bob then looks out of his scope for any enemy sneak attacks, catches one and shoots the enemy to stop it. Bob then turns to Larry with a serious look on his face and says, “now I got you covered!” And the moral of this story is to do what God tells you to do, even if it doesn’t make sense and He will have you covered.

Key Verse: Ps. 139:5 ‘You have hedged me behind and before and laid your hand upon me.’

The Warrior: Fall 2013 Devo

The birth of self-destruction starts in your thoughts, as having a negative thought towards yourself is like throwing a dagger at your own face. It sets yourself up for an ambush that gives the enemy access to come in to try to defeat you by your own words, and to win this battle of the mind you will need a powerful sword.

Hebrews 4:12 (ERV) "God’s word is alive and working. It is sharper than the sharpest sword and cuts all the way into us. It cuts deep to the place where the soul and the spirit are joined. God’s word cuts to the center of our joints and our bones. It judges the thoughts and feelings in our hearts."

“Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habit. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.” - Lao Tzu

A Clean-Slate: Operation Salvation - PT. 1

YOU’RE ON THE operating table. You’re about to get a heart transplant. The doctors and nurses surround you. Machines blip and bleep softly in the room. Then a man with hairy hands slips a mask over your nose and mouth, and you hear a slight hissing noise. You rip the mask off your face and push the hairy hand away. “Wait a minute,” you say. “What’s going on here?” The doctors and nurses look at you with puzzled expressions. “You were going to put me to sleep, weren’t you?” you accuse. “Well, uh, yes,” the head doctor says. “That’s how it’s done. We have to put you to sleep while I operate on you.” “While you operate on me?” you screech. “No way! I’m doing it myself.” “You?” the doctor says, sounding shocked. “Yeah,” you answer. “Who else?” He gently places his hand on your shoulder. “Look, I’m the doctor. You’re the patient. No matter how much you may want a new heart, you can’t do it yourself. You’ve placed yourself in my care. Now you just have to trust me.” You let out a sigh of relief. “Good. I think I could’ve handled the inferior vena cava, but I was worried about connecting that superior vena cava in time!” Of course, you’d never try to perform your own heart transplant, would you? But a lot of us make a similar mistake. We may think we can become Christians and go to heaven by being good and doing the right things. But that’s not how it works. The only way to get to heaven is by believing in Jesus Christ and asking him to forgive our sins. When we do that, his Holy Spirit comes to live in our heart. He then helps us to make right choices. Or, to put it in the doctor’s words: When we ask Jesus to “operate” on our heart, we place ourselves in his care and then just have to trust him. That’s how the operation works.

REFLECT: You can never be right with God by just keeping his commands; it is only by trusting Jesus. Does that mean you don’t have to worry about making right choices? Why or why not? Does making right choices make you a Christian? Does being a Christian help you to make right choices? what’s the difference?

ACT: Picture faith as an orange tree that stretches to heaven. The oranges are the right choices you make. The oranges won’t get you to heaven; only the tree will. But the tree produces the fruit, just as your faith will produce right choices.

PRAY: If you’ve never asked Jesus into your life, you can do so now. Pray something like this: “Father God, I admit that I’m a sinner. You sent Jesus to pay the price for my sins. I invite him now into my life. I accept his gift of the Holy Spirit. Thank you, Lord, for giving me eternal life.” (Josh McDowell)

A Clean-Slate Program

"Create Your World With Your Words."

A lad was told by his mother not to play near a certain pond. One day the temptation was too much, and, venturing too close, he fell into the water. He was very conscious of his wrongdoing, and most uncomfortable. So he wrote on his school slate: "Dear mother, I am sorry I have been bad. If you to forgive me, please rub it out." Back came the slate, perfectly clean! How like the love of God who said, " I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions, and, as a cloud, thy sins."
