There Is Enough - continued

He came back and said, “good! Now the song needs a bridge.” That meant a change in the structure/chords/and possibly the timing of the song!!! I was so frustrated, mainly because I don’t know how to do that musically and I would have to bring in the big guns on that and call Barb. It almost stopped me because I had it that Barb is too busy and will get frustrated with me needing her help.

So out came my theme songs… “I can’t and I’m not good enough!”

Thankfully, I swallowed my pride and called Barb and we had a great conversation about it. She told me how hard it has been for her in the past when someone critiques her songs, that she takes it as a personal attack rather than being open to the idea that the song could use some improvement. Over time though she acknowledged that every time she gave up her ideas of it being a personal attack, and opened her heart to the feedback she never regretted it. After all, if one person feels that way about the song, there will be others that feel that way too.

We started talking about the purpose of the bridge. To us it should be the epiphany of the song, the “breakthrough” if you will. We applied the idea to our lives and came to an agreement on the fact that we are in the flow of abundance and grace when we step into our purpose with gratitude and faith and let God take care of the rest. Then we agreed to hang up the phone and just allow the words and the rhythm to come to us. Within twenty minutes, we both received words, and Barb received the rhythm as well. She called me and sang it to me, and I loved it! She promised to record it and type up the new words and chords and send it off to the Music Minister. He responded almost immediately with “That works great! Thank you for being willing to make the changes! See you tomorrow.”

After the services we had several people compliment us on the song. One man told me that I had him in tears. Another man walked up to us and said “Great job today, I really enjoyed your songs, especially that one song.” I immediately thought that he meant the other song, (that Barb wrote) and he said no, I really liked the first one you sang, “There Is Enough!”

When I saw the music minister in the morning, he asked me if I was mad at him for critiquing my song. I laughed and said, well at first I thought… “What a JERK!” He laughed. I explained how grateful I was that he had the courage to teach me. It was excellent feedback and ultimately, the song now has an impact on people where as before, it really didn’t. Later, the three of us discussed it. He smiled and admitted that he knew how I felt. Being a song writer himself he has also felt as though it was a personal attack rather than a comment on the structure of the song when others critiqued his music. It was a great cleansing conversation. I feel like the three of us bonded in that moment.

God is so good! He sends us angels in the form of friends to help us grow, and learn and love ourselves so that we can have impact on others too.

There Is Enough!

There Is Enough! 3-26-2012 I had a humbling experience this week as a song writer. I forwarded my song “There Is Enough” to the Music Minister as a suggestion to sing that following Sunday, and he told me that my song just didn’t work for him and he challenged me to change it. My first human reaction was “What a jerk!” I immediately took his comment personal. Rather than see that he was attempting to improve the structure of the song to make it better, I felt he was attacking me personally.

I responded to him in a short and sassy kind of way and told him that I’d been singing that song for two years the way that it is and that we already recorded it that way in the studio, but I would take a look and see if I could figure out a way to sing it differently for him. That night I couldn’t sleep. The feedback he gave me was actually really good! What didn’t work for him was that I was singing happy positive words yet the music line descended downward. In other words, on a piano, my song went from high C down to low C while I was singing happy words. I certainly would never talk that way. I wouldn’t tell you I was so happy and yet sound like a deflating balloon. I very quickly figured out the solution and told him that I agreed with his feedback, I fixed it and I thanked him.

What The JaJa's have been up to, and some really fun upcoming events!

Every Sunday we sing, the services and communities feed our very souls, and we always leave with some new insight or breakthrough. We are so very blessed! Currently working on wrapping up our third CD, and hope to release it by Thanksgiving! If there is time, we may also release our first Christmas CD, so stay tuned! We are also currently working on a brainchild of Rev. Joel Baehr and Jimmy Boyd at Unity of Mesa to create a New Thought Gospel Choir!!! If you are interested please send us an email, and we will let you know when rehearsals will start. Our intention is to hold our first concert sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas. We are SOOOO excited about this project, and our vision is to eventually produce the first New Thought Gospel CD sometime next year!!! In October, Jeanne and I will be appearing twice with Chord On Blue, an awesome cover band that has entertained the valley for years! On October 15th, we will be singing at a cancer benefit (more details to come), and then again on October 21st at The Monastery (More details to come). Then on Friday, November 4th, The JaJa's will be appearing in concert at the Southwest Institute of Healing Arts (SWIHA) with a number of amazing local artists, for musical journey of discovery. On November 13th, we will be singing a short set at a fundraiser for a friend of ours. It's sort of an "open mic" style jam, and we also hope to jam with some of our musical partners. It will be a fun contribution -Dinner/cover is $20, and all proceeds go to benefit our friend. And finally, in December, we hope have our first New Thought Gospel Choir concert! And last but not least, On Sunday evening, Dec. 11th we are honored to sing for the MISS Foundation's annual candle lighting memorial service for those who have lost a child. The candle lighting takes place around the globe, and is a beautiful way to remember your child. As always, we would love to see you at any of these events. Our music is nothing without you. In Song, Barb

Next week, Sunday July 10th, The JaJa's at Creative Living Fellowship in Phoenix

I am looking forward to next Sunday at CLF! It is going to be an unusual service, called a Taize Ceremony. Dr. Michelle is on sabbatical so it is up to the practitioners and the musicians to create the service. We will be singing several Chants including Barb's song "I Am the Light of the World". I love that song so much! And Eileen Manning is going to be singing the third part on that song with us. I can't wait to hear the harmonies. They literally make me feel so good, calm, whole and at peace. This song was written for a Women's Day Retreat that we did a couple years ago with the Women's ministry at UOM and UDL. Barb wrote it after Rev. Kyra explained Sacred Geometry. That is why I think this song is so powerful. It is full of the Sacred G! Please join us next Sunday!
