8/12/2010-INTERVIEW W/ MARK BIALCZAK-THE POST STANDARD-SYRACUSE,NY
The way front man Wayne W. Johnson sees it, his work with Syracuse rock band Caroline Blue has come full circle.
That means at this moment, Caroline Blue consists of Johnson on guitar and vocals and whomever he decides to hire to play bass and drums.
In The Post-Standard studio, the bass responsibility went to Johnson's good friend, Azriel Mordecai, of fellow Syracuse rock band Zadoc and the Nightmares. In 2005, "Az," as Johnson calls his buddy, was a full-time member of Caroline Blue as Johnson recorded the CD "Slave to the Hourglass."
Caroline Blue started in 2000 and had its first live gig in 2001.
Johnson's band has two CDs to its credit, the aforementioned "Slave to the Hourglass" and 2007's "Not for the Innocent."
Right now, Johnson says, he's working with director Ron Bonk on a DVD that will include various long-form videos.
He's also submitted a song for inclusion on a Muscular Dystrophy Association benefit CD compiled by Tim Powers of the band Stix & Stonz.
Johnson also acts; he has a part in Bonk's indie movie "Mrs. Cannibal Holocaust," which is scheduled for release by year's end, and another in the indie movie "Rise Up & Fall,: which is in shooting.
And, after the long-form DVD is finsihed, it'll be back to recording a CD.
"I have enough original songs to do a number of CDs," Johnson says. "I had to go through a lot of styles to get Caroline Blue back to where we are now. We had been doing covers. Now we're back to doing all originals."

8/9/2010-"Stay" Live @ The Post Standard Building-Syracuse,NY Current mood: busy Category: Music
Music Notes Performance: Caroline Blue
-This started off in an interesting way. On Facebook I was looking at the Status Updates and saw Mark Bialczak-music writer for The Post Standard (newspaper in Syracuse, NY) & syracuse.com-had posted an update on a band performing on his "Music Notes Performance" series. While I did have an interest in having CB in this series, I also contacted Mark because I wanted to know if I could rent out the white room he was having the bands perform in-that is needed for a planned music video shoot I have.
(BTW-if anyone knows and/or has access to such a place and it can be rented on the cheap-please let me know).
-Anyway, I contacted Mark and he told me all the details involved in this. A small interview and then 1 song performed acoustically. Out of all the CB songs, "Stay" lends itself to that the most-although I did toy around with doing another song-just for something different. In the end, we ended up w/ "Stay" with a slightly different take than the studio version. There's a different intro, I sing it softer (and IMHO better) and there's no solo. Without a 2nd guitar or the use of distortion, there was too much of a dropout when I went from rhythm to lead.
-Anyways, I asked Azriel Mordecai (Zadoc...& the Nightmare) to join me on this one. He brought along a "special guest" drummer-Grover-who I nicknamed "Chachi" for this performance. I took a 1/2 day off from work, got ready and drove down to The Post Standard building. After trying to get into the vistor's parking lot a few times , we all got together and went inside.
-As we were getting ready, Mark asked some questions for the interview. Between me and Az, bad jokes were running amok in here :) I think we scared the videographer-Ellen-numerous times. (HA). All in good fun though.
-We ran thru it once and it came out great except for one thing-my vocal wasn't loud enough per say. We weren't mic'd like in a live performance-everything was being captured by the camera's mic. So we did it again, with me working to increase the volume-which I did-but it didn't come out as good as the 1st take. It wasn't bad but it wasn't as "sweet" (Ellen's words) than the 1st take. Also, I believe Az's bass was louder in the 1st take. "Chachi's" performance was constant thruout :) We also found out something interesting about him at the end of the song :)
-After listening to the play back, we decided to go w/ the 1st one. In addition, we did a bit part at the end and the 1st time it was good but the 2nd time it was kinda flat. It didn't have the spontaneity . So it's the 1st one. In both takes I had issues w/ my hair wanting to cover up my face while playing.
-Then a photographer-Michelle-was brought in and took several shots of me & Azriel. We were told that there would be a pic in Thursday's Weekend (comes with the Thurs. Ed. of The Post Standard) and the video would be up by that time as well. In addition to Mark's site, there will be an embedding code so we can put it anywhere.
-I want to say thanks to Azriel for playing on this and Tracy Mordecai for taking pics of this-as well as getting "Chachi" primed for this :). Thanks also to Mark, Ellen & Michelle for all of this-we had a great time & we hope you guys did too :) Keep a watch out for the video!

I was originally going to have this one done towards the end of the group of music videos we're doing, but things change so you have to go with it. Once again I teamed up w/ Ron Bonk from SRS Cinema-he made our last video "Pain" and will be onboard for several more videos currently in pre-production. Also in this video is my girlfriend Jennifer Gall.
-The story line basically goes like this. I'm outside wandering around-lost in thought about a past love. Suddenly, it's like I see her all around me, yet whenever I get closer, she's gone. I keep wandering till I get to a place-her place. I look inside & see her & I smile. That quickly fades when her new love enters the room. I'm crushed and walk away.
-The 1st shoot took place on Monday 3/15/2010 in an area behind Patty Trombino 's place. Originally I'd envisioned snow on the ground when coming up w/ this video and a week before the shoot it was still snowing off & on. Various reasons for delay prevented shooting earlier in the year. But that weekend before the shoot, the weather started to warm up rapidly-to the point that, on Monday, most of the snow that was around had melted. The area we shot the video looked kinda like a dead forest so we worked with what we had.
-For the most part, things ran smoothly-at least till the end. One funny moment-which did get caught on Ron's camera-was when I was walking towards Jen and I tripped & fell! We'll have to get that on a blooper reel or something. At the end, part of the story involved a photo catching on fire. I didn't have any lighter fluid so I brought rubbing alcohol-which didn't help much. I don't know how many attempts were made to set them on fire. Good thing I brought a lot of extra pics! As you can see from the pics, I did have some fun moments while Jen was trying to light the photo on fire (HA!).
-Probably the most memorable part of the shoot was walking around in the mud-our boots were soaked! I still have residue mud on my boots. We were actually going to shoot a lot more than we did, but we ran out of time.
-The 2nd shoot was done on Sunday 5/30/2010 (see how long these can take?) Scheduling & stuff you know....This was at Ron's place. This was the part where I see Jen with her new guy. An interesting twist is that the new guy is a more "domesticated" version of me! It's actually something I've had an issue with in the past w/ certain people-almost like a "domesticated WWJ" vs. the "rocker WWJ." thing. Just a little bit of symbolism in there.....
-This went by fairly quickly. BTW-the book Jen is reading is the Karma Sutra (Woo Hoo-HA!). Ron's puppies were a surprise addition in the shoot. Course, to have continuity, I had to wear a heavy leather jacket and a hoody like in the last shoot-only this was now the end of May. It wasn't as hot as I'd anticipated. Like a knucklehead, I forgot to bring my jacket so I had to borrow Ron's. I got to do some acting with the faces I made & I hope I pulled it off.
-The 3rd shoot took place on Sunday 6/27/10 in a park at 7 AM. That's right-7 AM. This was more just some filler scenes and things went by pretty quick. Both me & Ron commented that we have a lot of footage for a 3 minute song. We might have to make a couple of different versions of it :)
-No real complications here-except that at times it was hard to hear the boom box and I got 4 mosquito bites-including one on my forehead while we were still filming! Nice huh?
-So the filming is done and now comes the editing. Once that's done and paid off, we'll show it off. Big thanks to Patty Trombino for letting us film in her back yard; to Ron Bonk for all his work & expertise and to Jennifer Gall for her patience & performance in all this.
David Garlow just posted up an interview he did with me (WWJ) for the Syracuse Local Music Examiner. You can see it at http://www.examiner.com/x-52610-Syracuse-Local-Music-Examiner~y2010m6d27-Wayne-Johnson-of-Caroline-Blue-one-busy-and-talented-guy Please feel free to leave a comment here & one his page-thanks!
It's been awhile since the last NEWS bite, but that doesn't mean things haven't been happening! I've been working on expanding CB out on the web and I'll be posting my results as close to a weekly basis as time permits. Here's what's been happening since April...
