The Used Blues Band / Blog

One more time for the International Blues Challenge!

Well, 1:00pm this Sunday The Used Blues Band will compete regionally one more time to make it to Memphis for the 3rd time to take top honors at the International Blues Challenge. This year will be the first year we compete through the Golden Gate Blues Society , were looking forward to this new experience and have been rehearsing a lot to be as good as we can with new songs and renewed showmanship. The talent pool in the Bay Area is huge and we are excited to see how it all works out. Another interesting difference is that the audience attending will be able to vote! We are asking EVERYONE to come this Sunday and help vote us to the final round. 3340 Mowry Ave. in Fremont 1:00pm (they also are said to have amazing BBQ). Hope to see you there!

Hayward/Russell City Blues Festival

I am excited that Gary & I will be a part of the Harmonica Explosion again this year, we have been a part of this event for the last several years and love this festival. The atmosphere is as authentic as the music (nice lawn area, big stage, great food vendors). The harp event is at 1pm on Sat followed by Guitar Shorty (a must see). Come out and enjoy the REAL blues.

Used Blues Band Competing Again for the IBC's

Having been very fortunate to have won the Sacramento International Blues Challenge 2 years in a row and made it to the semi finals in Memphis both times, we are going to try one more time in the hopes we can win the local event again and as our buddy Tommy Castro says "make it back to Memphis one more time". We are hoping that the 3rd time is the charm as we really want to get in the finals at the beautiful Orpheum Theater to compete against the best of the best from around the world. Based on the actual judges score sheets they mail you after competition, we were not far from making it to the finals both times but getting there is no easy feat as each year the local competition is always getting better and better. This year we will be competing in the Golden Gate Blues Society IBC's, this is a talent rich blues society fr sure. We are going to be puling out all the stops to try and will locally and get back t Beale St. PLEASE come out and support us. We are scheduled for July 26th at the Smoking Pig in Fremont, the competition is from noon to 4pm.

IBC Memphis

Thanks to all of you who helped support us in getting to the International Blues Challenge this year in Memphis. While we did not make it to the final round we were happy to have made it to the semi finals and consider it a great honor to have been voted so highly considering the massive amount of national and international talent we were competing against. Each and every band that competed was great and we were amazed to have been in the top 25%. we will try gain if the opportunity arises!

Forgotten Seniors Christmas

Hi everyone, this will be the 3rd year in a row we have raised awareness, funds and gift donations for many of our local senior citizens who reside in some of the local nursing homes.

Several years ago I was made aware of the fact that while Christmas is very important to young children, it is especially important to the many elderly folks who spend their holiday season in a nursing facility apart from family (if they have any at all).

Filled with only memories of past holidays, they have little to look forward to. We have tried to brighten their holiday season with a needed gift, songs of the season and the reminder of the true reason for the season (the birth of Christ).

You can all help by bringing an unwrapped gift to our show on December 1st at Winterhawk Winery in Fairfield from 1pm to 6pm or by making a cash donation through our PayPal fundraising campaign.

Some of the requests range from cologne (men's & woman's), throw blankets, slipper socks, etc. We will be wrapping the donated gifts, purchasing others with the cash donations and bringing out to the nursing home the Sunday before Christmas to distribute them and sing traditional Christmas Carols with the folks in the home.
