JONATHAN ESTABROOKS, Baritone
A second year master degree candidate at the Juilliard School, Canadian baritone Jonathan Estabrooks has already been recognized for his command of the stage, rich vocal timbre and artistic versatility. At twenty four, this emerging artist has appeared in Canada, the United States and Europe as part of The Chautauqua Music Festival, La Musica Lirica, The Canadian Vocal Arts Institute and La Roche d’Hys and at Il Teatro di Opera in Sulmona, Italy.
This Spring he will perform the role of Papageno in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte with the Juilliard Opera Theatre followed by Ein Deutsches Requiem with Coro Vivo in Ottawa, Canada.
Mr. Estabrooks is equally at home on both the opera and concert stage. Prominent operatic roles have included: Shaunard, Belcore, Antonio, Betto, Testo in Monteverdi’s Il Combattimento and Dr. Cajus in Die Lustigen Weiber von. He has appeared as Baritone soloist in Handel’s Messiah, the Duruflé Requiem, and was seen on CBC Television’s Opening Night. He has been a guest artist with the Aldeburgh Connection, and Juilliard Opera Theatre.
He has also recorded for film and television and can be heard in productions featured at the Toronto International Film Festival and on CBC Television. Jonathan Estabrooks is a 2007 grant recipient from the Jacqueline Desmarais Foundation.
Jonathan Estabrooks began his musical training in Ottawa as a member of the Opera Lyra Ottawa Boy’s Choir and the Opera Lyra Ottawa Chorus. He was a voice student of Laurence Ewashko for twelve years before attending the University of Toronto where he received a Bachelors degree in performance with Darryl Edwards. He now studies at Juilliard with Marlena Malas.
While in Ottawa he was exposed to a wide variety of musical genres and styles, performing regularly with singer/song writer and mentor Dominic D’arcy and as a member of the Company of Musical Theatre, run by the late Peter Evans.
His vocal talents have taken him from local charity and fundraising events (CHEO, Easter Seals, Telethons, Optimist Club, Kiwanis Club) to events on Parliament Hill, national conventions and as anthem singer at the inauguration of the New American Embassy in Ottawa in 1999 (with Pres. Clinton, Prime Minister Chretien and Gov. Gen. Adrienne Clarkson in attendance).
Canada Day 2007 marked his professional orchestral debut with the NACO and Maestro Pinchas Zukermann. July 1st was a return to the Southam Hall stage, coming full circle from young chorister to emerging principle artist.
