From the Songwriter

Quite recently , my son expressed some frustration at not being able to write his songs, a sentiment which was quickly echoed by a couple of his friends. To that quandary, I wrote this :

Songwriting is 'Soul-Speak' It's not that the parts don't fit together, more like, the different 'voices' (ie the soul of the song) have yet to decide how best to finish what needs to be said, either by way of painting pictures with words (lyrics) or by creating tapestries with sound (melody).Just as other people's songs 'speak' to you in some way, so shall your 'songs', whether they be 'complete' or otherwise. Lyrics and Melody are just like people : they resonate better with some than others, they can be in eternal conflict with each other as easily and readily as they can be bound like lovers. The 'gift' of songwriting is not so much making the parts fit to some magic formula or within a predetermined creative timeframe, but rather, taking the time to 'absorb' , to 'listen' ( and with that, to actually 'hear' !), but more importantly, just to breathe! There is no such thing in my book as 'random' instrumental or lyric pieces. I have boxes full of 'songsketches' ,most of which have been scribbled down on some takeaway napkin or drink's coaster, and ALL of which I see as impromptu snippets of conversation between my 'Soul-Speak' and me :D

Later on that day, he had a break through .... :)
