I love being a writer. I get high from writing. The process intoxicates me. If I spend three or four hours writing I float when I stop. Writing is the only way for me to open up the part of my brain where all the unexpected things live. I used to skip school and write. It is no less a part of my genetic makeup than my eye color. I hate being a writer. It buries me alive. It keeps me inside my house wrapped up in my own selfish thoughts through warm summers and magical falls. While all the world is actually living I am alone writing about the living I have already done or the living I imagine I’ll do if my addiction to writing would ever permit it. Writing is a fickle mistress with demands and rewards as extreme as they are unpredictable. I can hold her down for a while – often for years. I build a cement casing over her so her hands can’t touch me and her voice becomes a distant murmur. Then I live drinking deeply of all the people I love. And for that time I am one hundred percent present and available to the world in which I live and breathe. But…cement is no match for a patient and determined lover. Through fissures and cracks, tiny and imperceptible at first, her voice gets louder and eventually reaches the perfect volume and frequency to shatter the wall I have built between my love for living and my love of writing. The casing I built over her after I finished my book in 2006 is in pieces now. She is in the center of my ear these days. I know this because for months everything I see and hear – every interaction between the people around me - looks like a story to me. All I can think about is how to tell it in a way that captures the essence of it. I love writing. I hate writing. It buries me alive. It intoxicates me. Hope to see you soon. Don

Happy Month of May Thanks to all the good folks who came out to my recent shows in Connecticut, New York, NH, Westford, and Somerville, Mass. Lots of fun nights including an especially wonderful co bill with Mr. Jim Infantino where we each did a solo set and then sat together on stage sharing songs, memories and conversation before performing a handful of tunes together. It was a very special event for me and I hope Jim and I can team up again sometime. Let's Talk About Ireland I'm going to Ireland in August of 2012 and I'm taking 20 people with me. No big buses, name tags, large groups or hurried stops. This is our route and projected schedule. Day 1: Pick up at Bunratty B&B’s (for people who have come in a day early) and Shannon Airport between 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. We drive through Limerick city and our first stop is at Adare, one of Ireland’s most picturesque villages, then to our hotel in West Cork. Lunch in Kinsale and the hotel in Skibbereen at approx 4PM. An afternoon nap and then a private concert with John Spillane, one of Ireland’s best-known folk singers. Day 2: Our first look at the Irish Famine Heritage Centre. This is in memory of almost two million people who died in our Great Hunger of 1845-1850. Lunch in Glandore and then go to Drumbeg Stone Circle, one of the most important ancient sites in Ireland. We go to Clonakilty and take part in our first Irish Session (some of us will also be contributing). Day 3: We go to Mizen Head, the most southerly point of Ireland. We lunch in Crookhaven by the water and spend some time on Barley Cove Beach, weather permitting. People interested in Irish history can do the Civil War Trail. This area was the hotbed of the Irish Civil War of 1921-1922 and we can explore battles and look at the life of Michael Collins. Then our Don White Concert at the hotel, after which, a pint at our local pub. Day 4: We move to County Kerry and Bonane just across the Cork/Kerry border. There is a wonderful craft shop here and the owner will take us on a short visit to the farm to learn how to make peat and POTEEN. Then the Ring of Kerry, one of the most famous drives in the world, through Killarney and head out the Dingle Peninsula to Ballyferriter, where we’ll be staying for the next three days. A private concert in the hotel with Pauline Scanlon, the best female singer in Ireland. Day 5: We do the Slea Head Drive, my favorite drive in Ireland. We’ll visit some ancient sites and walk on a couple of beaches before visiting the Blasket Island Centre. We go to Dingle and hear some great Irish music. Day 6: A rest day but there are many activities available such as golf, horse riding, trekking, canoeing, boat trips, fishing, browsing. Then an Irish music session in the hotel. Day 7: Out to County Clare (God’s own county), where I live. We drive through Tralee and then get the ferry across the Shannon Estuary. We visit the world famous Cliffs of Moher and also see the wonderful St. Bridget’s Well. Our hotel is in Doolin, the Mecca of Irish traditional music. We go to McDermott’s famous pub for my favorite Irish group, Foolin in Doolin featuring Blackie O’Connell on the Irish Uilleann (elbow) Pipes. Day 8: We go by ferry to Inis Oirr, one of the Aran Islands. We will be going back in time 300 years. This is a day not to be missed. We finish our day with a cruise UNDER the Cliffs of Moher. Then we experience more Irish music in one of Doolin’s great pubs. Day 9: This is our last full day in Ireland and we keep the best for last - the Burren, a 250-square mile limestone region, and meet with my friend PJ Curtis, Ireland’s best musicologist, a writer and historian. We learn how to SET DANCE. Day 10: Back to Shannon Airport, back to REALITY.

Don White and Christine Lavin Gig News

Back to The Mid-West in June Christine Lavin and I will be bringing our one-of-a-kind concert and comedy show back to The Ark in Ann Arbor Michigan on Sat June 18th. Chris and I are having a love affair with Michigan and we are very excited about this show in June. Seeing this show will cure what ails ya. Don White's New Open Mic

Don White's New Open Mike Because I'm not busy enough I have decided to start a second open mike in my home town of Lynn Mass. Actually, I'm doing it because I really want a place for musicians to hang out near my house so I don't have to drive to Cambridge all the time. Here's the info: On Sunday June 6th I will be starting another open Mike in Lynn, Mass at The Walnut Street Cafe at 157 Walnut St. The open mike will start at 6:00. Sign up at 5:30. You can also sign up by phone at 781 5961690. There is no cover charge. We will pass the hat for the featured performer who will go on at 7:30 for 45 minutes. Open mikers get to perform two songs. If people want to stay after everyone has performed, we will have a song circle/jam session. If the weather is good we can have the open mike in an open air courtyard that features a fire pit for cooler evenings. This open mike is geared towards music but spoken word is welcome. I am also involved with the Speak UP spoken word open mike at Tatiana's Restaurant in Lynn on Wednesday nights, so featured gigs are possible at Tatiana's for poets, writers and storytellers who come to the Sunday open mike. I have high hopes that this open mike can turn into something great for the community. The owner is very enthusiastic and supportive. There will be opportunities for musicians to pick up actual paying gigs. ( As features at the open mike or for paid performances on Friday and Saturday nights.) I intend to create an attentive environment where everyone can perform for a listening audience. And because there are two rooms at the cafe, people who want to mingle, network or catch up with friends can do so in a room away from the music. There is beer and wine available as well as a great selection of coffee, tea and sandwiches. So, come on out and help me get this open mike off to a big start on Sunday June 6th. You might just be in on the start of something big. Thanks in advance. Don White Feature performers in June: Sun June 6th - Lawren White Sun June13th - Walnut Sun June 20th - Zac Osborne Sun June 27th - Hayley Reardon
