Returned Mail

I received this today from my friend Glenda Steffler and just about cried 'cause this hit my funny bone...enjoy I think it really happened.

"Can you believe it …. they sent my Census form back! In response to the question: "Do you have any dependants?" I replied - "2.1 million illegal immigrants; 1.1 million crack heads; 4.4 million unemployable people, 901 thousand people in over 85 prisons; and 565 idiots in Parliament. Apparently, this was NOT an acceptable answer. Who did I miss ?" ================================== Got some shows coming up and some new vids and songs posted. Come if ya can or give a listen too. Please share these links with your friends.

Thanks

Well how was your Christmas and New Year? Mine was nice. I got to spend time with my loved ones at home and it was really really good... Oh and did I mention that the Turkey dinner was delicious! Umm Ummm.

I got to play a couple of gigs and started at a new venue. The Saanich Roadhouse Bar and Grill. Nice place and lots of parking. The owners are the same folk that own Evedar’s in Langford. A place I play at already, so was nice of them to think enough of my playing and writing to bring me with them to their new place. In this business and as a player building back into it, it’s nice to feel wanted.

In other news my buddy Shelly Dubois is doing fine thinks with her music and I highly recommend her to you. Give her a listen will ya. And while you are at it look up John Cowell. He is a buddy who I have done some writing with and he’s a hell of a good writer too so check him out.

In January I had the pleasure is being the first showcase of the year for the Victoria Folk Music society at Norway House in Victoria. This is what playing is all about. A venue with a real attentive, listening audience and an hour to show ‘em what you can do. They laughed, they cried and they gave Mike and me a standing ovation and an encore. It felt good to be a musician that night.

Right now I am putting up a video from a house concert I did in Jan. It’s a song that hasn’t been released before so go check it out if you will. It’s a love song about regrets and hope. With Valentines Day coming up it seems like a good time to make it public.

I also wanted to share some sad news with you all. A good friend of more than 20 years, Lynn Jackson passed away just a week ago. When I first moved to Victoria I lived with Lynn and Norm and their Family at the Selkirk Guest House for more than 3 years. They were my family and remain good friends. Lynn was know far and wide as “Sparkle

The Clown” and I miss her. She was a gem and the world was a better place with her in it.

Well that’s enough for now. Please check out my profile at ReverbNation while you are there hit the big blue SHARE button and friend me on face book at Jim Moffatt. This all helps keep the dream alive. and pay the bills. You will find lots of gig info there and if you are around when I am playing come on in and say Hi!

First Christmas Waltz

I am so excited! This is a another step for me in my musical journey. A step into the world of production.

This song was written by myself, John Cowell and Allen C.(I used initial because I haven't been able to get a hold of him) We started it as a exercise in a monthly songwriters group and liked our 20 minute effort enough to continue and see it through. Now a year later you get to listen to it.

Here is the story behind the song.

Paul and Tracy (the folk who run out group) tasked us with "Write a song with a Christmas theme. Start with a title and go from there. We will divide into groups of 3-4, you get 30 minutes then you present your song to the group. John and I teamed up right away and met in the kitchen (a room with closed doors and no distractions) we already had a title when All joined us and gave some ideas that sent the whole thing into a different direction. It's the ideas from different writers; ones who have seen different things and lived different lives; that give the turns and spins that make the stories a songs tells take a different spin.

Here John and I are going great guns on a solid idea and plan, the words are flowing and the Muse is happy, then in walks Allen and throws a monkey wrench into the whole thing. Several times too and the song got better and better. What a great experience and a good lesson for us all.

Well the end of our time comes and we played our song. It wasn't the best performance three strangers ever gave to a group but all agreed there was "something" there. We three decided to meet a couple more times, work the song some more and see what happens. So over the next couple months we meet, in person and on phone until finally we had a pretty finished work and John suggested we send a rough recording to a studio he knows in Nashville. We did. They recorded it and sent us the tracks and once I uploaded them on my studio I was able to add more background vocals, a lead vocal and guitar track (thanks Mike Sampson) and master it down to the song you are about to hear. And just in time for Christmas a year later.

Merry Christmas

Jim Moffatt asks for your help "Please fill this Survey"

Hello to Everyone,

I am sitting up stairs at home, in the room on the top floor that is my studio. I have the computer on and it's got two monitors. On one I am writing this letter to you all and on the other I have the TV on.

Huh?...well ...

Dinner tonight was a meal I cooked called " Appled-Spinach, Rice, Chicken" (a little concoction I made up in the slow cooker) and I have had most of a day off which I spent cooking, cleaning and generally unwinding. The last couple of months have been really busy. So now I am looking forward to getting grounded and back to my friends, back to my Janice and even some time to pet the dog. Time to reflect, set some goals and write some songs. To take aim at my next targets in this journey in music and I would be honoured to have you come along.

I am really too close to the trees that make up the musical forest to see it clearly. I need to talk to my fans, friends and family and decide what comes next. I need to make some decisions and I need advice. This is where you all come in.

Those of you who have been at a concert I played and joined my list know that I play a ton of songs not on my CD. So I am asking you your opinion and proposals.

* What songs do I put on my next CD. * Should I even do a CD? I mean CDs are great to sell at shows and to sign for fans as mementos but maybe... * I should only release a series of singles...

You see what I mean? I am wrestling with these questions and more. So here is what I purpose to do. Here is a link to a survey on Survey Monkey. http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/V75B8BF It's a short survey to get information and to vote for the songs that you think should be on my next CD and even give some suggestions as to songs you think I should cover. If I choose to cover a song you suggest you can bet I will give you an autographed CD when the project is done. This information will help Jan and I as we make our decisions.

Please understand I am not a data expert. I know there may be other ways to do this and if you have any I am open to suggestions but this is what I can do now and your assistance is welcome.

As always you are encouraged to share this Email with any and all.

Yours in Music

Jim Moffatt

What a Life! Being on the road was fun.

Greetings Everyone I know it has been too long sense I last wrote. I mean not only did some of you call write me and ask "What's up?" but I even got a notice from ReverbNation saying "too long" or maybe that was a typo, they meant "so long". Nope. They cashed my check so not so long, just too long. I know, I know. But you should see all this from my side. As my best friend Walter says, "busier than a one-legged man in a butt kicking contest". And its really great. So whats been going on? Well first I went to Eugene Oregon for the FAR_West conference It was totally worth the trip. Did it old style too, staying in the vehicle and showers in the rooms of friends at the conference. God I loved it. Thought I might be alone but after being in the basement parking lot for a few hours I took out my guitar to practice and after a few songs we had a full blown jam going on. I felt like I was back in the parking lot at "Pleasant Manor" in Calgary Alberta. Almost. No fire pit. No Scott Parsons, Jenny Allen or Donnie Blondon but I did meet some nice folk. Check out Karl Smiley. It was all good. I played 4 showcases at the conference and made quite a few new friends. I am in the process of contacting them and following up now. Some will be getting this letter. Welcome. After Far-West, I went to Vancouver to start the Home Routes Tour. Doing the Salmon Berry Route. I did 13 shows (house concerts) in 14 days and it was really wonderful. I meet 13 different households and families. I heard stories about their families, jobs and lives. One story in particular caught my attention. About 2 life-long friends in BC who stole Via Rail trains to raise funds for the Salvation Army. I will let you all know when the song is finished. You are gonna love this story. Driving through the mountains reminded me or how beautiful this country is. I posted a couple pics on FB but my BB phone really didn't do justice. Just Wow! any way... I spent one night on an organic farm ran by a co-op. What a great bunch at Chase. They walked me around and showed me everything. they even built a "cob_house". Very cool. I hope everything goes great for them cause they work hard and have a great collective heart. To everyone I meet on the tour I say thanks. Thanks for believing in me and my music enough to come hear. Thanks for joining my email list and being my friends and fans.

Whats coming?

This Saturday I am doing a concert with Mae Moore, one of the best song writers in Canada, Birgit Kuit great writer from North Vancouver Island, Chris Madsen, the traveler and myself, the story teller. If you are going to be in the area this Saturday the 19th please come. This is going to be a really good show but ticket sales are slow. Remember, Black Bird North. Talk again soon Jim

Time to Hit the Road!

Hello Friends. In 48 hours I have to have the car packed, my laundry done, my ducks in a row and quacking in unison. Yes its time to TOUR!! Well not quit, but almost. As soon as I am back from Eugene Oregon, I get to play thirteen small concerts in 14 days I am going to Eugene to spend 4 glorious days playing and performing for and with my peers. I get to ham it up with many of the west coasts best folk artists and I get to do it in front of a crowd. What more could a singer/songwriter folkie like me ask for? Well to get some more work out of it for starters. Last year I went to Memphis and because of that was able to secure this years Tour. I am so grateful for the opportunity that I could just dance. 48 hours have passed...I am in Eugene. The Ferry was a bit of a trial. I got there about an hour early and yet I was told that at the ticket window that I would not get on. I drove to my place in the line and try as I might I couldn't figure a way to get her in time without making that ferry. I went to the ticket both and asked for options and was told to go to the front office and ask there. I did and they actually pulled me out of line and put me in with the trucks. I got on. I am learning to ask for what I need. That is something that I find difficult to do. Never worked well as a child but I am learning. I will write you all in a week or so to let you know how the conference went and how the tour is doing. Did you listen and watch the video for "Boss On a Spit" yet? Let me know what your reaction is. Tell your friends and share it. Thanks Jim

Can I come to Your area?

Friends, After 20 years …. I’m hitting the road again. I’m working on new songs, putting up videos on YouTube, and having a lot of fun with live music. I’d like to see you. My favorite thing to do is house concerts, where I can really get to know the people I play for (and with!). These events are so much fun, and so memorable, that it’s a growing national trend. American Airlines did a story on it last December, and CNN is doing a story about it next month. Are you a little bit curious? Watch the short video that people use to promote these great events to their friends. http://youtube.com/watch?v=try-z4-4h04 If you think your living room is too small, you’ll LOVE this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8TQmolyuHg I’d love to play for you and your friends, so please contact me if you are interested. We can compare calendars and decide when I could be in your area. Your fan, Jim Moffatt http://www.reverbnation.com/jimmoffatt (new video on front page) PS - how much does it cost? Almost nothing! Read the free guide to find out how. http://bit.ly/cKQzQm Here are some areas I’ll be visiting soon: Oregan This month Southern BC, from Vancouver to Revelstoke, Oct - November Central Vancouver Island (Duncan) November Victoria Late November (Black Bird North)

CAN;T SLEEP

You know, I have always been one of those lucky people who can sleep anywhere. Ask my love Janice and she'll tell you. It's a skill I learned when I was competing as a wrestler and then perfected in the army. Yup I can sleep anywhere. Until now that is. It’s 4am and I am sitting here at my laptop writing you all 'cause I can't sleep. I have too many things running around in my head. You know what I mean. Lists of things to do; pick up tickets, deliver to stores, don't forget CDs, do I need the oil changed, I need to practice more and on and on it goes. Then I realize that it's all good. Everything is happening as it should and in its own good time and I really am on top on most of it. What I really am is excited! "Why you ask?" Well it's almost October and there are a bunch of great things happening. From October 20th till the 23rd I will be in Eugene, Oregon at the FAR-West Folk Alliance Conference. I will be doing 4 showcases there and a member of one panel group titled "Getting the Gigs". This should be good. Lots of venue folk there to meet and learn about. THEN..... From October 26 to November 9th I am doing a tour through Southern BC doing 13 shows in 14 days. I will be in Vancouver (Kitsilano), West Vancouver, Gabriola Isle, Salt Spring Isle, Victoria (2 shows), Langley, Princeton, Kamloops, Chase, Logan Lake, Chilliwack and Delta. What’s really exciting is I will actually get a chance to meet some of you. Face to face, and no computer in the way. I think that is very cool. If you live in one of those cities and want more info on when and where here is the toll free number to call for more info...1-866-925-6889 ext 207. This will take you to "Home Roots" (that the promoters/organizers/friends who are putting this together) and just tell 'em Jim Moffatt sent ya. They will have all the information you need. Oh but wait there is more! (Oh god, did I really write that?) But yes there is! On Sat Nov 12th I will be the feature at the Cowichan Folk Club and....On Sat November 19th I have the honour of being onstage with some of the best songwriters I know of, Mae Moore, Cris Madsen and Birgit Kuit. We will be doing a concert in the round at the St Ann’s Academy on 835 Humbolt Ave in Victoria BC. Tickets for this can be got at the McPherson Box Office and usual outlets or by phone at 2503866121 or toll free at 1-877-717-6121 or even online Black Bird North Tickets But after that is a rest. :-) Now you all know why I can't sleep. Lots of places to play and people to see but most of all music! Wish me luck and if you haven't seen the Boss on a Spit video just click here to see it on Utube. Please share it with your friends. All the best to you my friends Talk again soon Jim
