Victor, a Chicago native, grew up surrounded by musicians and music. His father was a saxophonist, and Victor, like other members of his family, got his start early by playing in his uncle’s church band. Vic remembers living for a time in the notorious Rockwell projects on Chicago’s west-side, where Jesse Jackson was active in the community on civil rights and where his father played for “Operation Push”. Growing up in the 60’s and 70’s, icons on the radio such as Aretha Franklin, Sly and the Family Stone, Coltrane, Miles Davis, James Brown, the Jackson 5, Kool and the Gang, P-Funk, Elton John, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and Rush gave Victor his R&B and Rock roots and helped shape his deep pocket. During his formative years, Victor fell under the spell of groove bass players such as Stanley Clarke, James Jamerson, Bernard Edwards, Chuck Rainey, Verdine White, Anthony Jackson, Jaco Pastorius, John Paul Jones, and Billy Cox. He continued his formal studies at Edmonds Community College in the Pacific Northwest and soon began playing and touring with various Blues and R&B bands in Seattle and Portland throughout the 80’s and 90’s most notably with Curtis Salgado, Lloyd Jones, and Linda Hornbuckle.
Since moving to the Bay Area in 1998, his busy career has included stints with Ledisi, Will Bernard, Joyce Cooling, Dick Bright ‘s SRO, Santana vocaiist Tony Lindsey, Tower of Power trumpeter Mic Gillette, Dawn Silva and the Brides of Funkenstein, the Family Stone Experience (featuring original Family Stone band members Jerry Martini and Greg Errico), Sons of Bitches Brew (with Mike Zilber and former Journey drummer Steve Smith), Zenith Patrol (an original collaboration with virtuoso bassoonist Paul Hanson and Haroun Serang), All Star bands with Frank Martin, Will Porter, Larry Batiste, & Vernon Black, Anthony Michael Peterson (aka Tru), James Robinson, Freddy Clarke, and many more.
Victor Little has established himself as a consummate professional electric bassist, displaying impeccable time, taste, technique, and tone while playing in a wide spectrum of styles. There are many different shows and showcases that Victor is working on for 2009, so keep checking in regularly to see what’s coming up next.
