Irony

A comedian died and found himself in a bright empty room. In front of him stood a spirit in flowing robes, looking at a ledger. " I have examined the record of your life, and I think you deserve this", he told the the man handing him six typewritten pages. As soon as the comedian began reading he realized he was holding "The Golden Routine" - The best humor material ever written. "I must be in heaven!" He shouted. "Not exactly" replied the spirit. "What will you do for an audience?"

Music 101

Music 101 You have been enrolled automatically as a friend, in the Balladeer Jeff Moats' music program. You will find the price is right, it is free. In-addition you will be exposed to un-synthesized, or electronically enhanced, over manufactured sounds produced only to follow some trendy fad, to shock and offend in outrageousness, to produce a buzz from which the intention is to create notoriety and attention. This, of course asks the question, how far “entertainment” can go before people are completely desensitized to intense stimulation. The intent is to cover the noise of our modern times. Because of the competition of eternal stimuli is so immense, some feel they have to take extreme measures to be heard and seen, others is because they have to hide the fact they have no talent. Their one and only goal of course, is to make money, and lots of it, not ART. If any art is created it is only by circumstance. My brother, a sculpture, creates art in a different medium, making three dimensional “things”. I make three dimensional sounds. Although, this endeavor is to put bread on the table, my goal is to share lyrics and melodies, images, thoughts and opinions unavailable anywhere else. Here you will find pictures, videos, opinionated blog postings, and songs of simple love ballads to socio-politico-economic significance. Expressions of quiet melodia, a clear tenor voice accompanied by guitar, banjo, and harmonica, recorded in an effortless manner, an instrument, voice and a microphone, of course the most important thing: MUSIC.

The cost difference of physical CD or download

Why is there a difference in price between a physical CD and a CD download?

The difference is because of costs for supplies related to putting a physical CD together. ( The cd, the printing, and the jewel case)

I have two physical CDs available at this time: "You've Been On My Mind" "A Rolling Stone"

The physical CDs can be purchased online through PayPal.

The cost of the CDs are $15.00 each.

The holidays are coming up. Fill your house with the gift of music.

Thank you for considering purchasing my music.

A Musical Question.

Can a white folk song performer successfully sing a black prison blues song?

My Voice and other Impedimenta

My voice and other impedimenta. I have been blessed with a clear natural "Irish" tenor timber, often compared to that of Glenn Yarbrough and Art Garfunkel, with the intensity of Richard Harris.

Yarbrough sang tenor for the pop-folk group the Limeliters between 1959 and 1963. Additionally, he had a prolific solo career and his most well-known song today is "Baby the Rain Must Fall", the theme song from the film of the same name.

Art Garfunkel (singer, poet and actor) is best known as the singing partner of Paul Simon, of the folk-rock duo. Garfunkel, not known as a songwriter, wrote "Canticle" as a rewrite of Simon's "Side of the Hill" for their recording of (Childs ballad # 1) Scarborough Fair.

Richard St. John Harris was an Irish actor, singer, theatrical producer, film dirctor and writer. Perhaps best known for his role as Albus Dumbledor in the first two films in the Harry Potter series. He is also known for his dramatic role, playing King Arthur in the 1967 film Camelot. Harris had a top-ten hit with his intense 1968 psychedelic recording of Jimmy Webb's song "MacArthur Park".

I don't remember when I started singing, it's something I have always done from the begining. My brother Scott and I would mimic The Smothers Brothers albums, with my brother preferring to lip synch, while I sang out with gusto. I sang along with the Monkees, (what 8 year old didn't) and the Beatles. I started singing along with my father's Kingston Trio records, because I found that I could accompany myself on guitar while singing. I tried to play the Beatles songs, but they were way beyond my first position cord patterns and were hard to play. So the folk music stuck. Great material, from tender love songs to hard hitting socio-politco-economic lyrics of social commentaries and significance.

I quit band in 1975 to focus on my voice and guitar playing. When I garduated from high school, I asked the band director who I should take singing lessons from to develop my voice. He said Lois (Utterback) Cowan was the best, but she wouldn't give me lessons unless I majored in music. That was something my father would not approve of, so I majored in history. I used to play in the halls for the students passing from class to class, for which I gained some notoriety. I had asked Mrs. (Utterback) Cowan if she would give me lessons, but she said "no I only give lessons for music majors". As luck would have it, she heard me singing in the halls and said, "your lessons with me are at 10:30 on Tuesdays". I told her I had a class then and she said "do you want singing lessons?" I dropped that class. During my time at Southwetern College, I had the pleasure of performing under the direction of Lois (Utterback) Cowan with the Choir and Chamber Singers. When I returned to Southwestern College years later I sang with the Choir under the direction of Dr. Terry Russell and the Chamber Singers under the direction of Dr. Russell and Richelle Mancini.
