Interview with The oakhouse's Carol Jenkins

We caught up with Tony and Max from the band to bring you this exclusive interview. Come along and meet the boys in person on Monday from 9pm. Watch this space for more details of the other acts also performing on Monday.

How would you describe the Tony Goff sound?

TONY: I would describe it as catchy, with a mixture of upbeat and heart-warming tunes that most people can relate to - sort of indie/pop/rock. MAX: I would describe what we do as ‘Rare Radio Pleasure Pop. RRPP for short’

Who are your musical influences?

TONY- I love 50's and 60's music as well as contemporary music of all genres. I would say I had a really broad taste. MAX – I’m a big fan of the Prog-Black-Metal band called Opeth. I am really inspired by their 12 minute-long songs – truly inspirational!

Tony, there is a clip on You Tube of you playing on a snow-covered roof. What was the story behind this rather unusual performance?

Well as you could tell it was a freezing day and me and Mikey the photographer were stranded in the house with nothing to do so we decided to shoot the video on top of my house in the snow!

You have been described as having star quality but what do you think makes a real star?

TONY: Wow! That’s a pretty cool thing to hear. I’m not sure really. I would say just be yourself, work hard and don’t take anything for granted. And always remember that the people who support you are getting you the attention. MAX: I’ve never heard this compliment before so thank you! I guess at this stage in our career its important to have a strong sense of character and be willing to make the effort to meet people who make the effort to come to our gigs.

Tell us a secret about yourself that would surprise fans!

TONY: I don’t think I could reveal anything that would be a surprise – people know me too well! MAX: I have a dart board on my wall and I like to sit on my bed and practise my aim!

What has been the most embarrassing moment on stage so far?

TONY: My mum drunkly came to one of my shows in a previous band and tried to steal my mic!

Where do you get your inspiration to write songs?

TONY: I get my inspirations to write songs through everyday life and dramas. The latest EP Butterflies and Compromises is about relationships and two of the songs on it are about two previous relationships.

If you could be stuck in a lift with two people, who would they be?

TONY: I hate lifts and was stuck in one before in Turkey. It would have to be the Sand Man and Natalie Portman, so Sand Man can slip out and get help while I have my way with Natalie – simples! MAX: Lily Loveless (Naomi Campbell – Skins)! And a camera man… who is holding a camera!

Tell us more about the High Wycombe music scene

TONY: There are some really promising acts on the local scene at the moment including Hary Quinn, Swoons and The Precious Few. Keep an eye on these hard working acts. MAX - I’ve got to give my love out to Nicole Burnard and the rest of her band ‘Rouge’. It’s refreshing to see such a unique band appear in High Wycombe of all places. They have real talent and are most definitely giving us a run for our money.

What can we expect from the band in the coming year?

TONY: You can expect excitement! Fun! and lots of Facebook notifications! We will be releasing another single and a video called Signs as well as our debut EP Butterflies and Comprimises. We’ll also be kicking off our UK tour in September. MAX: This year I want to ensure the band broadens its horizons more by ensuring that we play more out of town shows, PLUS our one year anniversary is on its way so I’m planning a unique way to celebrate this with our fans that doesn’t just involve playing a typical thank you show. Watch this space for more details!
