The many lives of 'New Frontier'

This song has had several different lives. I originally wrote & recorded it down in Santa Fe as a kind of bare, stark song with acoustic guitar and dobro. I sang it myself, guaranteeing a less than ideal listening experience! After moving to Colorado I recorded it again, but this time expanded with an entire new section added, and played a lot heavier (by the band I was in at the time). We did it as an instrumental with electric and slide guitars, fretless bass, keyboards and drums. I had this version posted on my other Reverbnation site for awhile: www.reverbnation.com/michaelfarrell

After forgetting about it for some time, I got back to it and expanded the song again, changing the form and rewriting the lyrics, taking the meaning of the song into new directions. While I was waiting to draft/sucker/beg the needed players to record this new version, I started to think it might also work for a small chamber ensemble. I ended up scoring it for Oboe, Flute and String Quintet. That is the version currently posted on 'Michael's Workshop'

Still, I haven't been able to get the prior unrecorded version out of my head. But then I started thinking, what if I used the string quintet and had a vocalist come in and sing the lyrics to that....?

I think 'New Frontier' will continue to evolve with at least two more versions likely before I can let it go ;-0

UPDATE!!: Just posted a new vocal/rock version of 'New Frontier' on my other RN site: www.reverbnation.com/michaelfarrell
